Saint-Rémy-Sur-Avre: Church, landscapes and AgglOcéane
Accommodation in Saint-Rémy-Sur-Avre
Saint-Rémy-Sur-Avre offers a range of ways to shape your stay: the Église Saint-Rémy with its Renaissance portal, the history of the fortress at Le Plessis, river landscapes and the AgglOcéane aquatic centre. When planning your trip, you can choose between architectural and local history, outdoor activities, and the centre’s leisure, fitness and relaxation facilities. These themes appeal to different interests and can be prioritised according to the focus of your trip.
Church and architectural history
The Église Saint-Rémy has been classified as a Monument historique by decree since 5 May 1930. Its west façade features a remarkable Renaissance portal created at the beginning of the 16th century. The portal’s style and date of creation make it a specific point of interest for an art-historical perspective. The dates refer to different things: 1930 marks the church’s classification, while the beginning of the 16th century marks the creation of the portal. A place of worship is said to have stood on the site of the Église since the 11th century; initially, it is thought to have been a priory church dependent on the Benedictine Abbey of Coulombs. The church thus brings together a possible early building history and a precisely dated portal from a later period.
The history of the fortress at Le Plessis
Another part of the area’s history takes you to Le Plessis. A fortress in the form of a medieval motte-and-bailey was built there in 1152 to protect against the English and Normans. The remains of the fortress can still be seen in Le Plessis today. The motte-and-bailey form describes the type of fortification; protection against the English and Normans explains its purpose. In contrast to the religious history of the Église Saint-Rémy, the focus here is on the medieval fortification and its defensive function.
River landscapes and outdoor activities
The Avre and Peluche rivers flow through a peaceful valley in Saint-Rémy-Sur-Avre. The area also opens out onto the landscapes of the Beauce and a plateau with extensive cereal fields. The valley and plateau offer contrasting landscapes: the surroundings shaped by the two rivers and the expansive grain fields. Outdoor activities include walking paths along the banks of the Avre and a large park with a fitness trail. One suggested route through the town passes the old bridge. Fishing is also one of the activities in Saint-Rémy-Sur-Avre. A fitness trail offers a different kind of activity from the riverside paths: it brings exercise together in the park, while the footpaths follow the river.
Leisure at the AgglOcéane aquatic centre
The AgglOcéane aquatic centre is a facility of Agglo de Dreux, located within the territory of Saint-Rémy-Sur-Avre. It offers leisure, fitness and relaxation facilities year-round. The outdoor pool is 25 metres long, has five lanes and is heated to 28°C year-round; it can be reached through an access passage. If you are planning to use a lap pool during your trip, its length and number of lanes offer specific points of reference. AgglOcéane is thus a leisure destination in its own right, alongside the historic sites and outdoor activities.
