Montigny-le-Gannelon: Château, Church and Loir
Accommodation in Montigny-le-Gannelon
Montigny-le-Gannelon combines a clearly defined village layout with architectural history and outdoor activities. The upper part overlooks Saint-Hilaire-sur-Yerre and Cloyes-sur-le-Loir; the lower part runs along the Loir towards these two places. This means the village brings together two distinct landscape settings: views of the two places from above and a riverside setting below. When planning your visit, the first question is whether you want to focus on buildings, walks or mountain biking.
Village layout and historic buildings
Visible remains of the medieval fortifications still survive, including the Porte Roland, a former watch post and several small towers. The Porte Roland once provided access to Montigny-le-Gannelon from Châteaudun.
The Église Saint-Sauveur / Saint-Gilles was rebuilt on Romanesque foundations in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The church houses a wooden reliquary dated 1828 containing the relics of Saint Félicité, who is depicted as a wax figure. The Romanesque foundations belong to an earlier building phase than the reconstruction; the church therefore combines older foundations with a later building history.
The Château de Montigny-le-Gannelon is a Renaissance château set in a 15-hectare park. The park is ideal for a walk. A tour takes you through the Salon des Dames, the grand salon, the billiards room and the Kings’ dining room. At the château, you can choose between spending time in the park and touring the interior rooms. If you plan to visit the park or the interiors, check the current access and visiting conditions before you travel; visiting options and opening times may change.
The buildings span several periods: medieval fortification remains, Romanesque foundations with a later reconstruction, and a Renaissance château.
Parc des Tirelles and mountain biking
The Parc et Plan d’eau des Tirelles is jointly managed by Montigny-le-Gannelon and Cloyes-sur-le-Loir. Its facilities include a fitness trail, information boards about birds, fauna and flora, as well as benches and picnic tables. The boards add nature-related information to the trail; the seating and tables provide a place to rest or have a picnic. Walking, fishing and mountain biking are possible there year-round. As local conditions and access may change, check the current status of access and facilities before your visit.
The circular route “Le château de Montigny-le-Gannelon: circuit n°4” is a 45 km mountain biking trail rated easy. While the park offers several activities year-round, this route is a specific mountain biking option with a stated distance and difficulty rating. This lets you choose between activities at the park and a ride with a published distance and rating. Check the latest downloadable route information before setting off.
