Dangeau: Church, Château and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Dangeau
Dangeau offers several specific points of interest for a stay: the Romanesque architecture of Église Saint-Georges, the architectural and garden history of Château de Bouthonvilliers, hiking trails and an educational farm. Culture, outdoor activity and a connection with farm animals are different highlights to enjoy here. When planning your trip, you might consider whether you would like to focus mainly on architectural history, a hike or a visit to the farm.
Romanesque architecture and building history
Église Saint-Georges is an unvaulted Romanesque church. Its architectural features include side aisles, a semicircular apse, an ambulatory and three chapels with domical vaults. The layout thus combines an unvaulted church space with vaulted chapels. Domical vaults are rounded like domes; the apse forms the semicircular end, while the ambulatory runs around this area. A sculpted 12th-century portal is located in the third bay of the southern side aisle. A bay is a section defined by the architectural layout; the reference to the third bay specifies the portal’s location. The wooden, pointed bell tower dates from the 17th century. The portal and tower add distinct historical notes to the church’s architecture.
Château de Bouthonvilliers, which has been altered several times, today consists of a central building dating from the 18th century, framed by two older pavilions. The château’s façades and roofs were listed as a historic monument by a decree dated 11 August 1975. The park also has its own design history: it was previously laid out in the French style; in 1850, Maître Joly enlarged it and redesigned it in the English style. The dates relate to different aspects: the first dates the central building, while the second relates to the park’s redesign. The architecture and garden design therefore have distinct historical reference points.
Hiking trails with different features
The La Fontaine hiking trail is 14 kilometres long and takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes. Two footbridges on the route cross the Ozanne. Check the local signage before setting out. Les grands bois is 13 kilometres long and passes through plains, woods and a valley; yellow markings indicate the route. The trails differ in length by just one kilometre. Les grands bois is therefore slightly shorter, while La Fontaine also gives you an approximate time estimate. When planning your day, you can take into account both the distance and the described route.
Visit to the educational farm
Ferme pédagogique AnimO Perch' offers tours of its educational farm, where visitors can get to know the farm animals. This visit offers a different focus from the architecture of the church and château. If you plan a visit, check the latest visitor information beforehand, as it may change.
