When planning your stay, Sancerre can be explored through three main themes: medieval buildings, wine culture and a hiking route. If you are looking for a hotel in Sancerre, first consider which of these themes interests you most during your trip. The places and activities below each offer a different focus.

Medieval Buildings and Culture

The Tour des Fiefs is a protected historic monument and the last remaining part of Sancerre’s 14th-century feudal castle. The offering includes a visit to the park and a tasting in the tower’s cellar, accompanied by a winemaker. Booking is required for this experience. The tour combines a first-hand glimpse into the castle’s history with a wine tasting.

In the town centre, La Petite Maison de la Culture is housed in the remains of a 10th-century church. It offers exhibitions, the Micro-Folie digital museum, a library, and a cultural and artistic space. Here, an early religious site meets contemporary cultural offerings. For those interested in exhibitions and digital culture as well as medieval buildings, it offers another point of interest in the town centre.

Wine Culture and Local Tastings

The Maison des Sancerre is housed in the Maison Farnault, a residence dating from the late Middle Ages. Winemakers from the Sancerre appellation restored the building and developed it into an interpretation centre for the appellation’s wines. The historic setting and insights into wine come together here.

The Château de Sancerre stands on the left bank of the Loire, overlooking a unique terroir with four different soil types and 57 hectares of vineyards. The vines are 30 years old on average. The château’s guided tours combine wine tastings with suitable local specialities. Alongside information about the terroir, wine and regional accompaniments are central to the visitor experience.

The seasonal Visite gourmande de Sancerre offers a different focus: the guided tour passes through historic buildings and medieval lanes, and ends with a tasting of local products. It thus links the town’s history with local produce, while the château’s guided tours explicitly include wine tastings and suitable specialities. As the Visite gourmande is offered seasonally, check the dates before your trip.

Hiking Route and Further Planning

The La Ronde des sorciers hiking route starts at the Sancerre tourist office on the Esplanade Porte César. A 5.5-kilometre section of the route follows the GR31. On the return, the route passes along Rue Serre-Coeur through Sancerre and its medieval streets. Check local access conditions before setting out.

The Route des vignobles du Cœur de France covers a much larger area: it runs for 170 kilometres from Sancerre to Châteaumeillant, passing through the Centre-Loire wine-growing areas, picturesque villages and characteristic wine cellars. The two routes therefore serve different planning scales: a section of a hiking route in Sancerre and a longer connection through several wine-growing areas. Consider whether you would rather focus your stay on the town’s buildings and streets, wine experiences or a route.
