Orval combines a striking landscape with a local history that spans early signs of settlement, religious buildings and fortifications. If you are looking for a hotel in Orval, you can plan your trip around whether the town’s history or its green spaces will play a greater role in your stay.

Between Berry, the Cher and Germigny

Orval lies on the border between Berry and the former Bourbonnais. Wooded hills surround the town, and the Cher runs along it. Orval also marks the end of the Boischaut and opens onto the Germigny valley. The river, hills and valley each give the landscape a distinct character. The town’s position between these two historic regions is also part of its character.

Early signs of settlement and Romanesque architecture

Evidence at the site of Orval points to initially sporadic settlement from the end of the last Ice Age, around 12,000 BC. During the Gallo-Roman period, a small craft centre developed in an agricultural setting, where pottery and metalworking were practised.

The Church of Saint-Hilaire is Romanesque in origin and initially served as a castle chapel; its entrance and choir from this period have been preserved. The church also preserves remains of a mighty fortress. Together with the fortress of Montrond on the opposite bank, this stronghold guarded the crossing of the Cher. Sacred architecture, surviving structures and the military importance of a river crossing come together here in a distinctive historical setting.

La Croix reliquaire was listed as a historic monument by the French heritage authority in 1891. According to tradition, Saint Louis is said to have given La Croix d’Orval, a reliquary, to the Sully family, the lords of Orval. The reliquary is currently in storage for security reasons. If you would like to see it during your trip, check its current display status in advance.

Green spaces and activities by the water

The Parc de la Loge des Vignes offers a green space for relaxation in the centre of Orval, with a pond. Picnic tables are available there. If the tables are important for planning your break, check before your visit whether they are set up. The park offers a different focus alongside the historic buildings.

Lac des Vignes has a walking park, a fitness trail, and municipal vineyards and orchards. Fishing is permitted there for children under 14; check local rules before fishing. The age limit is an important consideration if you plan to fish during your stay. The walking park and fitness trail offer other ways to spend time outdoors, while the vineyards and orchards add to the site’s municipal character.

When choosing a hotel in Orval, you can first decide what matters most: would you like to focus on the town’s history, or include the green spaces and activities at Lac des Vignes? This priority can help you choose a destination that suits your travel interests.
