Ménétréol-sur-Sauldre lies in the heart of the Sologne and is crossed by the Petite Sauldre. Water and wetlands feature in several of the area's natural attractions: alongside the river are the Tourbière des Landes and the Étang de Ménétréol-sur-Sauldre. There is also the Circuit des Millets, a trail through sandy countryside with woods and ponds. The village therefore offers specific points of interest when choosing a place to stay, especially for those who want to focus on Sologne landscapes, waterways and local history.

Landscape between river, marsh and ponds

The Tourbière des Landes is located in the commune of Ménétréol-sur-Sauldre, in the Petite Sauldre floodplain, covering 10 hectares between the two communal ponds. The river valley, area and position between the ponds give the marsh a precise location within the commune. The peat bog brings together acidic peat habitats, wet heathland and marshy woodland. This combination encompasses different habitat types: peat habitats, heathland and woodland describe distinct natural features of the area. In the Sologne and Centre-Val de Loire, the Tourbière is an important site for the conservation of acidic peat bogs. Its precise local setting thus goes hand in hand with regional importance for peatland conservation.

Circular trail and fishing

The Circuit des Millets showcases another side of the Sologne landscape: the easy circular trail is 10.0 kilometres long and takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes. It passes through sandy countryside with woods and ponds. Sandy countryside, woodland and ponds shape the scenery along the trail, while the Tourbière is defined by its wetland habitats. The distance and approximate duration provide two different planning details: the length of the loop and an estimated timeframe for the walk. Check the trail conditions before setting out.

The Étang de Ménétréol-sur-Sauldre is near the village centre, on the road towards Souesmes. Anglers can find roach, tench, carp and a few large grass carp in the pond. If you would like to include fishing in your stay, check the applicable rules and conditions in advance, as they may vary. The two waterside locations are situated differently: the Tourbière lies in the floodplain between the communal ponds, while the Étang is near the village centre on the road towards Souesmes.

Village history

The village's origins date back to the 11th century, when it was mentioned under the name Monastériolum. There are ancient tombelles in Ménétréol-sur-Sauldre, considered remnants of rituals that are still little known. The name and the tombelles point to different historical themes: the village's early mention, on the one hand, and rituals considered little known, on the other. These historical traces add another focus to the area's natural attractions.
