Menetou-Salon: Château, Wine and Heritage
Accommodation in Menetou-Salon
Menetou-Salon brings together winegrowing, architectural history and a range of activities. For planning purposes, you can focus on several areas: the heritage trail, the history of the château, winegrowing, and other cultural or leisure activities. The GR31 also passes through Menetou-Salon. The topics you combine depend on your interests and how much time you plan for individual visits.
Winegrowing and the Château
The Menetou-Salon wine-growing area received the Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée designation in 1959; Menetou-Salon is one of the communes of origin for its wines. In the heart of the village, opposite the Château de Menetou-Salon, is the Domaine Viticole du Prince et Duc d’ARENBERG. The “Prince & Duc d’ARENBERG” cuvée is sold exclusively at the Château boutique. If you would like to buy this cuvée, check its availability before you arrive.
A visit to the Château can end with a tasting of wines from the Domaine du Prince d’Arenberg, if available. Allow an average of 1 hour and 15 minutes for an individual visit to the Château. Check visit options and tasting availability in advance.
History and automotive culture
The Château de Menetou-Salon was enlarged between 1884 and 1891. Paul Ernest Sanson carried out the expansion, taking the Palais Jacques Cœur as his inspiration. This phase of construction has specific dates and a named architectural reference. The history of the Domaine de Menetou-Salon is separate: it was sold to Jacques Cœur in 1448.
Another cultural attraction is the Musée de l’Automobile. It reflects the Princes of Arenberg’s commitment to preserving automotive heritage. Alongside the Château’s architectural history, it brings the preservation of automotive culture into focus.
Heritage trail and walking routes
The Menetou-Salon heritage trail is 2 km long and takes about 45 minutes. Fourteen panels provide information about the history of the commune. The route, approximate duration and subject are clearly defined: the trail connects a walking route with the history of the commune, while the Château’s expansion illustrates a specific period in its architectural history.
A 2024 municipal bulletin lists at least six signposted walking routes, ranging from 2 to 23 km. The GR31 also passes through Menetou-Salon. These details offer different ways to plan: an approximate duration is provided for the heritage trail, while the 2024 overview describes other routes by length.
Planning other activities
Fishing at the Étang communal de Farges is available with annual and day permits. As rules and seasons may change, check the current conditions before your visit. Bell Fourche City offers Western riding, an introduction to black-powder shooting and lasso handling; check the participation requirements to suit your visit.
Le Carroi offers activities in adult theatre. As programme dates may change, check the schedule for your travel dates. It is also worth checking the current conditions for fishing and Bell Fourche City activities before adding them to your plans.
Find a hotel for your stay in Menetou-Salon
The approximate 45-minute duration of the trail and the average 1 hour and 15 minutes for an individual Château visit offer two different planning guides. You can arrange your trip around the visits that matter to you, and check the relevant details for your dates for tastings or activities with changing conditions.
