Chezal-Benoît offers travellers cultural history centred on its mill, church and abbey, as well as natural attractions including routes, forest and ponds. These highlights give your trip planning a clear direction: you can focus on buildings and history or set aside time for walks, mountain biking, fishing and picnics.

Mill, Church and Abbey

The Moulin de Nouan is a Berrichon tower mill built between 1800 and 1826. The type of mill and its construction period offer a tangible connection to Chezal-Benoît’s industrial heritage. The mill can therefore be considered a cultural and historical highlight in its own right, alongside the church and abbey.

The Moulin de Nouan has a seasonal visiting period from 1 July to 31 August; visits by appointment are also possible. Booking ahead by phone is recommended. Check the seasonal visiting arrangements before planning your visit.

The church of Chezal-Benoît is now a parish church. Its striking façade features an elegant portal topped by three broad openings. A central mullion divides the entrance, which is decorated with capitals and rich plant motifs. The openings structure the façade, while the capitals and plant motifs add ornamental detail to the entrance.

The abbey of Chezal-Benoît also offers a historical perspective: it emerged amid the monastic revival at the end of the 11th century and the beginning of the 12th century. It was founded by an Italian monk who arrived from Vallombrosa in 1093. The broader period in which the abbey emerged and the monk’s arrival in 1093 are two distinct historical reference points.

Routes, Forest and Ponds

For a trip with a specific distance and approximate time frame, “La ronde des bois” is a useful guide. The easy route is 12 kilometres long, takes about three hours and is intended for walking and mountain biking. The distance, difficulty rating and approximate duration together provide a framework for planning.

At the end of “La ronde des bois” lies the Étang des Biches, a suitable spot for a picnic and listening to the birds. Another option is the “La Chapelle de Chœurs et Chezal-Benoît” route, which leads into the village centre. This destination is a practical point of difference when choosing a route: one ends at the Étang des Biches, while the other leads into the village.

The Choeurs Bommiers forest is well suited to walks and features a range of tree species and diverse wildlife. It offers a nature-focused alternative to the route described by its specific distance and approximate duration. If you want to explore on foot, you can include a walk in the forest or the easy route in your plans as two different options.

The municipal Étang du Moulinet is also a place to relax, fish and enjoy picnics. A picnic is therefore a suitable option at both the Étang du Moulinet and the Étang des Biches; fishing is among the recreational activities at the Moulinet, while the Étang des Biches is a place to listen to the birds. Fishing arrangements may change, so it is advisable to check before visiting.
