Rogny-Les-Sept-Écluses: Locks, Canal and Heritage
Accommodation in Rogny-Les-Sept-Écluses
Rogny-Les-Sept-Écluses offers a clear focus for travellers interested in canal history and heritage: the former locks, other historic sites and marked paths give your stay a range of highlights. At the site of the Seven Locks, the design and history take centre stage; the washhouse and Saint Loup Church offer other points of interest, while walking trails draw your attention to the canal and the surrounding landscape.
The Seven Locks and Their History
The former locks, known as Les Sept-Ecluses, lie below the Canal de Briare. They were designated a historic monument by decree on 29 December 1983. The complex was initially designed as a flight of six adjoining locks; a seventh was added later. This explains the difference between the original design with six locks and the later complex with seven. Together, they were intended to overcome a height difference of 24 metres towards the Loing Valley.
The site of the Seven Locks is free to access year-round, 24 hours a day. Information panels about the site's history stand at the foot of the locks. Guided tours explain the construction history, operation and development of the locks from 1597 to 1887, using numerous documents. If you are planning a guided tour, check current availability and booking conditions in advance.
Church, Washhouse and Heritage
Saint Loup Church occasionally hosts concerts. As these are not held regularly, check the relevant dates if you are planning to attend a concert. Another aspect of the heritage is the painting “Les Pèlerins d’Emmaüs”: it is dated 1757 and was designated a historic monument in 1908.
The washhouse in Rogny dates from 1895. Life-size frescoes depict the work of the washerwomen. The washhouse is open to visitors free of charge; you can get the key from the tourist office or the campsite. During the season, guided tours are organised for groups of more than ten people. If you are planning a group tour, enquire about seasonal dates.
For another way to explore the heritage, the free Legendr app offers two immersive tours in Rogny-les-Sept-Écluses. They complement the information panels at the locks and visits to the washhouse with self-guided heritage routes.
Paths along the Canal de Briare
From Rogny-les-Sept-Écluses, La Scandibérique runs along the Canal de Briare and first follows the Rigole de l’Étang-Neuf. This borders the site of the seven locks. The route passes through a wooded landscape with ponds, combining a connection to the canal with a walk through the surrounding area.
The “Les Sept Écluses d’Henri IV” circular route is rated easy. It is 9.8 kilometres long, has 34 metres of elevation gain and a stated duration of two hours and 55 minutes. These figures help you estimate how much time to allow for the walk; check the route details before setting out, as they may be updated.
Marked hiking trail No. 72 is available seasonally. It follows part of the Canal de Briare’s water supply system and returns to the Seven Locks of Rogny-les-Sept-Écluses along the former canal route. The trails offer different highlights: the circular route lists its distance, elevation gain and duration, while hiking trail No. 72 follows the course of the historic water system. Take the seasonal availability of this trail into account when planning your visit.
