The history and culture of L'Isle-sur-Serein can be seen in specific buildings, historic furnishings and community activities. If you are looking for a hotel for your stay, these details can help you assess the destination based on your personal interests.
Saint-Martin Church and historic monuments
Saint-Martin Church was built in 1837 by the architect Tircuit. Its Tuscan style, rare in France, led to its inclusion on the list of historic monuments in 1991. The architecture and heritage protection are therefore marked by two distinct dates: construction in the 19th century was followed by its designation as a protected monument. Its furnishings include a 17th-century altarpiece and the 18th-century painting “The Martyrdom of Saint Hippolytus.” In addition to the building’s history, the church also holds works of art with their own historical context.
The Tumulus du tertre à Tormancy has been protected as a historic monument by decree dated February 5, 1931. While the church’s construction date and furnishings are important points of reference, the focus here is on the date of its protection.
The medieval history of the village
In the 13th century, L'Isle was built as a castle on the right bank of the Serein. A millrace surrounded the castle, forming an island. The river and the millrace are therefore directly linked to the recorded origins of the village. This early history provides a different point of reference from Saint-Martin Church and its later furnishings.

The Théâtre du Serein puts on a season of live performances in collaboration with village associations.
