Avallon: Trails, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Avallon
Avallon sits on a granite outcrop, with the Cousin River flowing at its southern foot. The town can be explored through its landscapes, walking trails and culture: the Avallon Découverte route takes in views of the Cousin Valley, while other trails focus on urban green spaces or the protection of aquatic habitats. Cultural attractions also include the Musée de l’Avallonnais Jean Després and a gallery and shop. If you’re looking for a hotel in Avallon, these different themes can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.
Landscapes and Walking Trails
The Avallon Découverte route offers panoramic views of the Cousin Valley. The Chemin bleu takes a different approach: this 2.5-kilometre family trail raises awareness of the protection of aquatic species and their habitats.
Also 2.5 kilometres long, the Circuit du Jardinier has a different character: this town walk winds through Avallon’s parks and gardens and leads to the Parc des Chaumes. So distance isn’t the only factor when choosing between the two trails; the Chemin bleu focuses on aquatic habitats, while the Circuit highlights urban green spaces.
The Parc des Chaumes has been an LPO refuge since January 2015. Birds, insects, mammals, amphibians and reptiles have been recorded there, along with 90 plant species. Squirrels, badgers and hedgehogs live in the park, and deer pass through it. Wildlife sightings may change over time.
Town History and Culture
The Musée de l’Avallonnais Jean Després was founded in 1862 by the Société d’études d’Avallon. Since 17 September 2003, it has held the designation “Musée de France” under French heritage law. Its founding and museum designation mark distinct stages in the institution’s history. The museum is housed in a former 17th-century college, whose oldest section is medieval.
The Collégiale Saint-Lazare also offers a distinctive architectural feature: its choir is 2.50 metres below the portal and can be reached via 17 steps.
The La Boutique de Création BO gallery and shop brings together eight artists in Avallon. Their disciplines range from woodwork, jewellery and ceramics to perfume, photography and sculpture. The participating artists may change.
