Saint-Eusèbe: Canal History and Walking Trails
Accommodation in Saint-Eusèbe
Saint-Eusèbe offers several distinct points of interest for a stay: the structures along the Canal du Centre, two easy walking trails with stated distances and walking times, the Étang Berthaud, and options for horse riding and flights. There is also the Demarcation Line memorial, with information panels on local history. If you are looking for a hotel, these themes can help you organise your travel interests: canal history, outdoor activity, water and remembrance each offer a different focus.
Canal History and Structures
The Bassin de la Grue is a 120-metre-long, semicircular turning basin on the Canal du Centre. It was already in existence at the beginning of the 19th century. Its shape, dimensions and historical context provide a tangible structure along the canal.
At the La Favée lock site on the Canal du Centre, the complex includes a lock chamber. The isolated road bridge at Parisenot was built in 1789–1790. Together, the two sites represent different types of structures: a lock chamber and a road bridge from the late 18th century.
Historically, the former Étang de Parisenot served as a harbour for wines from the Côte Chalonnaise, which arrived via the road from Montchanin. A dam separates the Étang de Parisenot from the Canal du Centre, and a lock feeds water from the pond into the canal. Thus, the site brings together two distinct aspects: its former role as a harbour and its function in supplying water to the canal.
Walking Trails and the Étang Berthaud
The two easy walking trails are easy to distinguish by distance and stated walking time. La Vieille Bourgade (SEU1) runs through Saint-Eusèbe for 5.6 kilometres; the walking time is 1 hour and 20 minutes. Saint-Eusèbe au fil de l'eau (SEU2) is 7.3 kilometres long, with a stated walking time of 1 hour and 50 minutes. This makes SEU2 1.7 kilometres and 30 minutes longer than the shorter route. If you are considering how much time you have available, La Vieille Bourgade is the shorter option according to the stated figures; both trails are rated easy.
The 2024 tourist guide lists the 50-hectare Étang Berthaud among the fishing waters in the Creusot Montceau area. Check local regulations before fishing. There is also a beach at the Étang for unsupervised swimming. Swimming conditions may change seasonally; swimming is not supervised. Check local conditions before swimming.
Memorial Site and Other Activities
At the Demarcation Line memorial in Saint-Eusèbe, engraved posts mark the sites of former German checkpoints. Information panels there describe local history. The memorial therefore offers another point of interest alongside the canal structures and walking trails.
The Centre équestre Le Chêne Vert offers riding lessons, trail rides, and courses with horses and ponies. Ptiote Vadrouille offers flights with 360-degree views of the countryside and forests, as well as rivers and castles. Flights last between 45 minutes and 1 hour 15 minutes; the duration depends on the weather and landing conditions. For planning purposes, the stated time range is therefore more useful than a single fixed duration.
