Discover Gueugnon: Art, History and Landscapes
Accommodation in Gueugnon
Gueugnon stretches across the rolling landscape of Charolais. The Arroux divides the town into eastern and western districts. The town’s cultural highlights include the monumental stainless-steel sculptures in Parc du Château d’Aux, Église Saint-Maurice and Musée du Patrimoine Gueugnonnais. If you’re looking for a hotel in Gueugnon, these sights can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.
Art and architectural history at Parc du Château d’Aux
Parc du Château d’Aux is home to an open-air museum featuring monumental stainless-steel sculptures. Château d’Aux adds an architectural perspective to the art: it is a bourgeois residence dating from the late 19th century, set in a park that slopes down towards the Arroux. The park with the sculptures also includes a 620 m² floral labyrinth with 17 varieties of wildflowers. Its design may change with upkeep. The park brings together monumental art, the residence and a landscaped floral area as distinct aspects of the site.
Church and museum: history across different periods
Église Saint-Maurice was built in the 1870s to replace an 11th-century church. Its Gothic Revival forms are combined with Romanesque elements. The church thus brings together different architectural influences: the 19th-century building and features that recall Romanesque architecture.
At Musée du Patrimoine Gueugnonnais, exhibition rooms trace the history of the Gueugnon ironworks from their founding in 1724 to the present day. A permanent archaeology section focuses on Vieux Fresne, a Gallo-Roman centre of ceramic production. A dedicated geology room displays local minerals and fossils. The museum therefore covers the history of the ironworks as well as archaeological and geological subjects.
Alongside Musée du Patrimoine Gueugnonnais, a pottery studio offers public introductory sessions on using the potter’s wheel in July and August. The activity is seasonal; check the specific dates before your trip. The museum season ends each year with the European Heritage Days.
Local produce and cycling route
La Boutique Partagée brings together local food and handcrafted goods in a direct farm- or studio-to-shop supply chain, with no intermediaries. The shop brings together 27 local craftspeople, producers and creatives, who take turns selling their own products in person. The product selection and participating vendors may change.
A cycling trip can also be combined with a visit to Gueugnon. Cycle loop No. 5 from Paray-le-Monial leads to Gueugnon and its park with the monumental sculptures. The route is 49 km long and rated easy for cyclists and mountain bikers. Check the route and signage before setting off. While the Arroux divides the town into eastern and western districts, the rolling Charolais describes the landscape through which Gueugnon stretches.
