Épertully: Nature, Heritage and Hiking
Accommodation in Épertully
Épertully lies where the northern fringes of the Morvan meet the Couchois. For choosing a destination based on specific interests, the area offers several points of interest: landscape and nature observation, a historic object in the Chapelle Saint-Marc, and a named circular hiking route.
Landscape, species and waterways
Épertully lies on a ridge and has a distinctive silhouette. The ridge describes its topographic location; the silhouette highlights the shape of the settlement. This places the broader regional setting alongside a specific feature of the local landscape.
The survey conducted as part of the municipal ABC project recorded 879 animal and plant species, including 89 legally protected species. In addition, 52 plant species are considered rare to very rare in Burgundy. Protected status and regional rarity are different classifications. The figures refer to the time of the project survey and are not a current population estimate.
During the survey period, several pairs of woodlarks bred in the meadows of Épertully. This adds a specific observation about a bird species and its habitat to the summary figures for the species recorded.
The Ruisseau des Bas also has a distinctive natural feature: calcareous tufa deposits can be found along the stream. This waterway adds a geological aspect to the meadow observations and information about the species.
The nature-related features differ in scale: the survey brings together numerous animal and plant species, the woodlark breeding concerns a specific species in the meadows, and the tufa deposits are a geological feature of the stream.
A memorial in the Chapelle Saint-Marc
The Chapelle Saint-Marc in Épertully houses an ex-voto chair dating from 1914–1918. A mother donated it in memory of her sons who were killed in the war.
An ex-voto is a religious offering; in this case, the chair was specifically dedicated to the memory of the sons. The date places the object in the period of the First World War, while the story of its donation preserves a personal family memory.
The chair brings together a precise period, a place and a specific reason for remembrance. This historical detail differs from the regional landscape and nature observations: its focus is a family’s memory of the sons who were killed in the war.
The circular hike around Mont de Rème
The “Boucle autour du Mont de Rème” circular hiking route is 12.41 kilometres long and starts and ends at the Ancien Lavoir d'Épertully. Shortly after leaving Épertully, it follows the GR137.
The distance, shared start and end point, and early section on the GR137 address different planning questions: they indicate the route’s length, starting point and a landmark along the way. You can factor the distance into your day’s plans. Check the trail conditions and route before setting out.
