Discover Saint-Pierre-le-Moûtier
Accommodation in Saint-Pierre-Le-Moûtier
Discover Saint-Pierre-le-Moûtier through its architectural history, crafts and landscape. Highlights include the Les Éventées windmill, the Église Saint-Pierre, a revived oil mill and the Chemin des carrières walking trail. Seasonal fruit picking and the opportunity to fish at Étang du Panama add to the range of activities. This lets you tailor your stay to different interests—from historic buildings and oil production to a route through the old town and surrounding countryside.
Windmill and technological history
The Les Éventées windmill was originally built in 1861 and renovated between 2003 and 2007. This tower mill has a rotating cap that allows the sails to be turned into the wind. The entire body of the mill does not rotate; the movable cap allows the sails to be positioned appropriately. This specific structural feature shows how architecture and function work together. Tours of the mill last about an hour. As the visiting programme may vary, check the visiting arrangements before your arrival.
Oil-milling tradition and production
The Huilerie Léveillé was founded in 1867 and revived in 2014. Using traditional methods, it produces walnut, hazelnut and toasted rapeseed oil. At the revived Huilerie Réveillée, demonstrations of its machinery offer insights into walnut processing; the demonstration programme may vary. Alongside windmill technology, this highlights a different kind of production: here, the focus is on machinery and making different oils. If you are interested in traditional crafts, you can easily distinguish this focus from the history of the windmill.
Church, priory and walking trail
The Église Saint-Pierre has been classified as a historic monument since 1886. The gateway to the former Benedictine priory has also been preserved. The church and gateway highlight different aspects of the religious heritage: the church is notable for its classification, while the gateway is a surviving feature of the former priory.
The Chemin des carrières walking trail starts and ends in Saint-Pierre-le-Moûtier. It passes through the lanes of the medieval old town, into green countryside dotted with Charolais cattle, and offers beautiful panoramas. The route thus takes in both the town’s lanes and the open landscape. If you would like to experience both on a single walk, this trail is a good option. Fishing is also possible at Étang du Panama. Check the current rules and access conditions before your visit.
Seasonal picking and farm shop
At GAEC Verger de Saint-Pierre-le-Moûtier, you can pick seasonal fruit yourself: from 1 to 20 June, and in September and October, on Mondays from 2 pm to 6 pm and Wednesdays from 10 am to 6 pm. Check these seasonal opening times before your arrival. Fruit and processed seasonal products are also sold directly at the farm. A vending machine that is open around the clock is available year-round.
