Waterways and Views
Cercy-la-Tour lies at the confluence of the Canal du Nivernais and the Alène, Aron and Canne rivers. The canal and rivers give the town a distinct character shaped by its waterways. At the same time, Cercy-la-Tour sits on a rocky outcrop and offers remarkable panoramas of the town and its surroundings. The waterside landscape and elevated setting provide two different perspectives on the town.
A special natural site near the canal is the Source des Vreilles. It is a karst spring with a constant flow of 600 litres per hour.
On Foot Along the Canal du Nivernais
The circular route “Entre vieilles pierres et rivières” follows the towpath along the Canal du Nivernais to Cercy-la-Tour’s pleasure harbour and to structures associated with the waterway. At 10.5 kilometres, the route gives you a clear idea of the distance when planning an outing. It also takes in the bocage landscape and the area’s cultural heritage, including the Moulin de Chevillon.
Romanesque Church and Other Buildings
The Église Saint-Pierre is an 11th-century Romanesque church (1080), protected as a historic monument since 7 July 1987. Inside the church is a 111-centimetre-tall wooden statue of Saint Hilary of Poitiers, dating from the 18th century. It is gilded with gold leaf and silvered with powder. The building dates to 1080, while the wooden statue is from the 18th century, so they belong to different periods.
Another structure is the Fontaine d'Aligre, a fountain made of sandstone and bronze dating from 1844. It depicts the Marquis and Marquise d'Aligre. The Passerelle sur la Canne is distinct from it in both location and function: it stands on the right bank of the Canne, upstream of lock no. 31 on the Loire-side section of the Canal du Nivernais.
Fishing Options with Different Focuses
Anglers can also choose between two clearly distinct options. The Chaumigny fishing course in Cercy-la-Tour, known as “Passion,” is geared towards carp fishing. At the Carpodrome de l'Étang de la Tuilerie, you can fish for carp and tench under the no-kill rules of a dedicated carp fishing lake. The 10.5-kilometre circular route offers a walking outing; for fishing, the Chaumigny course focuses on carp, while the Carpodrome offers carp and tench fishing under no-kill rules. At the Carpodrome, it is advisable to check the current regulations before your visit.
