Alleyras: Gorges, Hiking Trails and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Alleyras
Alleyras lies in the Gorges du Haut-Allier, on the border with Lozère and Ardèche. The Allier shapes the landscape around the village: near Alleyras, pebble and sandy beaches line the riverbank, while paths and viewpoints draw the eye towards the gorges. A stay here therefore offers a range of different highlights—riverbanks, natural attractions, hiking routes, stories and architectural history.
Gorges, Waterfall and Viewpoints
The Chemin du bois leads to a waterfall about 15 metres high. At the edge of the village, the “Tourettes” viewpoint has an orientation table. The waterfall is a specific natural attraction; Tourettes adds a viewpoint and a guide to the surrounding landscape.
The PR244 Le circuit d’Arsac route offers views of the Allier Gorges as it descends towards Alleyras. The view of the Poutès dam is particularly striking. Unlike the waterfall on the Chemin du bois, this route focuses on the gorges and a prominent structure.
Hiking Routes of Different Lengths
The PR245 Le Moulard starts in Pont d’Alleyras and climbs to viewpoints overlooking the Allier Gorges. This difficult hiking route is 12.1 kilometres long and is listed as taking four hours. The GR470 stage from Pont d’Alleyras to Chapeauroux is also difficult and covers 21.8 kilometres. Both routes start in Pont d’Alleyras, but differ in length; the PR245 is also listed with a specific duration.
Check trail conditions before setting off: route details for the PR245 may change as a result of maintenance, and local conditions should also be taken into account for the GR470 stage.
Stories, Crafts and Architecture
Along the “fabluleux” path, puppets tell the fables of La Fontaine, fairy tales by Perrault and Grimm, and stories about traditional crafts. Literary tales and traditional craft stories form a distinct cultural highlight here, alongside the natural attractions of the Allier.
In Pont d’Alleyras, the “terre et sentiers” space explores the pottery of Vabres. Traditional bread ovens can still be found in several hamlets in the commune. Places with these ovens include Alleyras, Anglard, Le Moulard, Le Pont d’Alleyras and Aussac.
The Château de la Beaume was rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries in a rustic medieval style. Its interior features date from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries and are characteristic of noble residences in Velay. These include plasterwork, wood panelling and painted ceilings.
Activities on the Allier
The natural beaches along the Allier are ideal for cliff jumping, riding the rapids and enjoying natural slides. The riverbank is therefore not only a scenic highlight, but also a destination for activities in its own right, alongside the hiking routes and cultural attractions.
