Laroquebrou’s medieval streetscape and paths associated with the dam offer different ways to shape your stay. The heritage trail winds through the narrow streets, while cycling and walking routes connect to the Saint-Étienne-Cantalès dam. If you’re looking for a hotel in Laroquebrou, you can plan around whether local history, cycling, walking or an event is most important to you. The arrangements also vary: the trail is open year-round, guided tours take place at set times, and group visits are available by reservation.

Château, narrow streets and heritage

The former Château de Laroque has been partially protected as a historic monument since 5 June 1972. Its main construction phases date from the 13th and 16th centuries. A 13th-century bridge provides another point of reference: the château’s earlier construction phase was followed by a later one in the 16th century.

The heritage trail through Laroquebrou winds through narrow streets lined with half-timbered houses clustered around the château and reflected in the Cère. The loop therefore brings together several defining features of the townscape rather than focusing on a single building. It is open year-round and starts at the tourist information point of the Châtaigneraie Cantalienne tourist office on Rue de la Trémolière. If you prefer a guided tour, you can join one on Wednesdays during the summer school holidays; group tours are available year-round by reservation.

Other sights include the 13th-century bridge. The former hospice is now used as an exhibition venue; its programme may change. Together with the half-timbered houses and château, these offer different ways to take in the historic townscape. When planning your visit, it is useful to bear in mind the difference between the year-round heritage trail and guided tours, which take place at set times.

Cycling and walking routes

The “Des quais aux rives du lac” mountain biking loop starts in the centre of Laroquebrou and runs alongside the historic Saint-Étienne-Cantalès dam. The dam was built between 1939 and 1945. The loop is considered technically easy and suitable for families. Route details may change, so it is worth checking the latest information before setting out.

The “Entre 2 Lacs” gravel route also passes through Laroquebrou; its route through the town is described, while the mountain biking loop starts in the centre. On foot, the “La Roquaise” walking trail crosses the dam and returns through Laroquebrou’s medieval streets. This route therefore connects the dam with the historic townscape. For hikers, Laroquebrou is also the last stage before the long crossing of the Cère gorges. The Via Arverna, a pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, is also linked to Laroquebrou.

Festival and seasonal activities

The recurring international Boogie-Woogie Festival is the highlight of the festivities calendar. It lasts four days and draws musicians, music lovers and dancers from across France and neighbouring countries. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the latest dates and programme.

From mid-July to the end of August, the Laroquebrou fishing association offers introductory fishing sessions at the reservoir and in the river. Sign up through the Châtaigneraie Cantalienne tourist office in Laroquebrou. As seasonal dates and registration procedures may change, it is advisable to check both with the office in advance.
