Labesserette: Church, Pietà and circular trail
Accommodation in Labesserette
Labesserette’s features include a church with architectural and art-historical points of interest, a memorial stele, a local tradition and a named walking trail.
Church, Chapel and Pietà
The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is predominantly late Gothic. It preserves enigmatic carved depictions of people and animals. The Rosary Chapel inside the church has its own date and stylistic classification: it was built in the late 14th or early 15th century in the Early Romanesque-Gothic style. The description of the church as predominantly late Gothic and the dating of the chapel refer to different parts of the church.
The church also houses the Pietà: a 62-centimetre-high, polychrome, movable work of art carved from stone and protected as a historic monument. Polychrome refers to its multicoloured decoration. An additional layer of paint was removed in 1987. The Pietà’s material, colours, exact dimensions, protected status and later intervention all contribute to how the work of art is viewed.
Memorial Site and Local Tradition
The Pierre des gendarmes memorial stele was erected in 1939 in memory of ACIER and AUZOLLE. The two gendarmes were killed at this spot on 9 March 1800. The memorial site thus connects a precisely dated historical event with a commemorative marker erected later. For orientation: the stele is on a small path, about 100 metres from the former national road.
According to a local tradition, an inn came to be called “Maison rouge” after an incident involving the Drac. This story adds another perspective on the local past to the history of the buildings and memorials: it should be understood as a tradition, not as a verified account of a historical event.
Circular Trail and Landscape
The walking trail is called “La cuvette du Veinazès”. The circular trail of this name starts in the car park opposite the school and town hall in Labesserette. Use this car park as your starting point; check locally on the trail’s availability and conditions before setting out.
Labesserette lies in the Veinazès basin. This microregion is characterised by bocage countryside and includes foothills covered with chestnut trees. This landscape context is distinct from the individual buildings and directions for the circular trail: it relates to the town’s geographical setting within the microregion.
