Hunawihr: Vineyards, Wine and Culture
Accommodation in Hunawihr
Hunawihr is located on the Alsace Wine Route, on the edge of the foothills of the Vosges and surrounded by vineyards. The village combines a distinctive wine-growing landscape with historic buildings and various ways to explore the area. When choosing what to see, you can therefore focus on specific interests: wine, village history, trails or nature destinations.
Vineyards and Village Life
The “Grands Crus GEOVINO” wine trail runs through Hunawihr. One special wine experience is the free guided tour, accompanied by a winemaker, through the Grand Cru Rosacker vineyard, the village of Hunawihr and the Cave de Hunawihr. It ends with a guided tasting of wines from the Cave Vinicole. The vineyard, village and tasting are part of a single, connected itinerary.
The village’s appearance is also closely tied to winegrowing: Hunawihr has narrow streets and winemakers’ houses, some of which feature half-timbering and small, enclosed courtyards. The open vineyards and the village’s compact buildings thus represent two different sides of the area. You can explore Hunawihr from the vineyards or along the forest trails.
Church and Cultural History
The Church of Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur has a double-fortified cemetery and is one of the region’s rare simultaneums. The church and cemetery date from the 15th and 16th centuries. The church also contains 15th-century frescoes of Saint Nicholas. The architecture, cemetery and frescoes offer specific historical points of reference for exploring the village’s cultural heritage.
Hunawihr is also a stop on the European Heinrich Schickhardt Cultural Route. This adds another cultural connection to the local architectural history, while the wine trail and guided tour highlight wine as a defining theme of the area.
Walks and Routes
A 2.4-kilometre playful walking tour offers a way to discover the village. The “La biodiversité Hunawihr” circular trail is 2.9 kilometres long, takes about an hour and has parking available. The two options differ in both theme and distance: one tour focuses on discovering the village, while the other is about biodiversity.
A 17-kilometre route in Hunawihr can be explored independently, on foot or by mountain bike, all year round. This lets you choose a route based on your preferred distance and mode of travel, without confusing this longer option with the shorter walks.
More Things to See in the Area
The tourist ride on the Petit Train passes through the village and vineyards. It takes about 45 minutes and offers commentary in 14 languages. Alongside the walking tours, it is a separate way to experience the village and vineyards on a narrated ride.
At Jardin des Papillons, visitors can stroll among hundreds of exotic butterflies from Africa, Asia and America. NaturOparC is a five-hectare nature park in the heart of Hunawihr’s vineyards. These two destinations offer different nature experiences: butterflies at Jardin des Papillons and a nature park among the vineyards.
