Hohrod: Trails, History and Crafts
Accommodation in Hohrod
Hohrod brings together three highlights for your stay: trails through high-altitude pastures and forests, World War I memorial sites, and farm products and crafts. If you’re looking for a hotel in Hohrod, first consider which of these will shape your stay. Would you like to focus on walking and hiking, explore local history, or discover how things are made locally? The experiences also vary in format, from circular trails to visits, workshops and demonstrations.
Trail ideas for Hohrod
Hohrod has three themed circular trails. The Barrenkopf Trail leads directly to Glasborn and passes through the village’s communal high-altitude pastures. At the Versant du Soleil in Hohrod, there are walking and hiking opportunities around Rosskopf. Hohrod’s natural landscape is designated as a Natura 2000 site; the forests can also accommodate environmentally responsible outdoor activities. Hohrod is also connected to the 400 kilometres of marked hiking trails in the Munster Valley, including the GR5 variant 531. For orientation, you can choose between local trail themes and the wider Munster Valley trail network.
Memorial sites and local history
The Hohrodberg–Linge historical trail includes a German blockhouse, preserved as a remnant of the front line fortified by German troops from summer 1915. A German command post, still in very good condition, is also located along the trail. The Monument aux morts de la Guerre 1914-18 stands on Route du Linge in Hohrodberg. It was erected around 1925 in memory of the soldiers and civilians who lost their lives in the First World War. The origins of Hohrod and Hohrodberg are also part of local lore: they are linked to an early community of courageous pioneer workers known as the “Hohe Roder.”
Farmstead cheese and crafts
The Ferme Versant du Soleil in Hohrod makes artisanal farmstead cheeses, including Munster AOP, Barikass and Tomette. The availability of individual products may vary. Guided tours with tasting are offered year-round on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10 a.m.; in July and August, Friday tours are also available. During shop opening hours, you can also visit independently using information panels and a short video.
Woodturning offers a range of ways to get an insight: at the Au Bonheur des Ours workshop, introductory sessions let you make your own candle holder or mushroom. Booking is recommended. Doris Baerenzung gives ongoing woodturning demonstrations Monday to Friday at 9:30 a.m. in a workshop set up on the ground floor of her home in Hohrod. Another craft is casting cowbells. A newspaper report from April 2025 described how Daniel Higlister continues this traditional work in his workshop in Hohrod. The report described him as the last cowbell maker in Alsace and one of only three bell casters of this kind working in France. Check visiting and demonstration times, as well as workshop details, before your trip; booking is recommended for the workshop.
