Eschbach-Au-Val: Mountain Landscapes and Village History
Accommodation in Eschbach-Au-Val
Eschbach-au-Val combines its connection to the Petit Ballon with a rich village history. Two highlights stand out when choosing this destination: the Sentier Émile Hertzog, with its series of named places, and the village’s historic buildings. Depending on whether you prefer spending time outdoors or are interested in architectural styles and places associated with everyday life in the past, you can give these themes different levels of importance.
The Valley and Views of the Mountain Ridges
The village lies in a green valley that rises to the foot of the Kahlenwasen (Petit Ballon). The Dorfhüss (village house – events hall) offers unobstructed views of the mountain ridges of the petite Vallée de Munster. The course of the valley and the views offer two different connections to the landscape: one describes the ascent to the foot of the mountain, while the other is about the view of the mountain ridges.
Historic Buildings and Village Life
The village center has traditional houses dating from the 18th century. The Ferme at 36 rue Principale dates from the late 18th or early 19th century. Its dwelling is made of plastered rubble granite. Pink sandstone surrounds frame the ground-floor windows; the first-floor and attic windows have oak frames. The mairie-école was built in 1862 and is listed in the inventory. The mairie-école’s campanile was destroyed in a bombardment in 1915 and later restored. The dates therefore range from 18th-century houses to the 19th-century mairie-école, with the Ferme dating from the period in between.
Opposite the mairie, or town hall, stands the former washhouse with an elegant bell tower. It served as a communal village space where women boiled, beat, scrubbed and washed laundry, and chatted. The buildings therefore differ not only in when they were built, but also in their former functions: the dwelling, mairie-école and communal washhouse each represent a different aspect of village life.
The Sentier Émile Hertzog
The Sentier Émile Hertzog is accessible to everyone and leads from the northern part of the village to the first foothills of the Petit Ballon. From the lower village, the route passes through Obersolberg and Erschlitt to Buchwald at the foot of the Petit Ballon. For those interested in hiking, the destination at the foot of the mountain is not the only highlight; the route through the named intermediate places is part of the experience too. This makes the route a specific focus for your stay, rather than seeing the Petit Ballon only as a feature of the landscape.
