When looking for a hotel in Mundolsheim, your choice of destination may depend on the subjects that interest you during your stay. Local points of interest include the Protestant church, the Arboretum du Gloeckelsberg, two named trails and Fort Ducrot. There is also a weekly market.

Church and local history

The Protestant church can be viewed from several historical perspectives. Its porch is protected as a historic monument. The inner portal belongs to the original 12th-century bell tower, where mythical creatures are depicted. This brings together a protected porch and a medieval part of the tower decorated with figures. The church also houses the tombs of eight Joham de Mundolsheim, the lords of the village. Its architecture and local ruling history therefore offer two distinct ways to explore Mundolsheim.

Arboretum du Gloeckelsberg

The arboretum focuses on botany. In 1990, the municipality of Mundolsheim decided to reforest the site; after earthworks, it established a botanical educational trail there. A total of 1,500 forest plants, 140 standard trees and 3,360 groups of plants were planted. They represent great diversity and the tree vegetation of the local deciduous forests. In the agricultural landscape, the dense and varied vegetation provides a habitat for small animals, including birds, insects, spiders, microfauna, reptiles and small mammals. Alongside the historic buildings, the arboretum offers a distinct way to explore nature and vegetation.

Trails and Fort Ducrot

The two named trails can be compared by length: the Sentier du vieux village is 2.5 km long, while the Sentier du fort Ducrot is 4.2 km long. The difference is 1.7 km, giving you a concrete basis for choosing between the routes. Both trails were created in 2021 and 2022; the years are not assigned to either trail individually.

Fort Ducrot, formerly Fort Podbielski, was built between 1879 and 1882. Its position on a narrow ridge accounts for its asymmetrical layout, which is unique in Strasbourg. Regular guided tours of the fort are offered, covering the eventful history of this period. If you would like to plan a tour, check in advance for a suitable date. The public transport information for the fort lists the Collège stop and bus line 73; check the timetable for the day of your visit.

Weekly market and planning your visit

Mundolsheim’s weekly market is held every Thursday from 3:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Parc de la Mairie. If you want the market to be part of your stay, check the date before your visit, as the schedule may change.
