For a stay in Mothern, you can choose from several areas of focus: circular routes, the Rhine landscape, or local history. The routes differ in length and character; there are also traces of the river’s heritage and an exhibition about the Rhine. If you are looking for a hotel in Mothern, these themes can help you organize your interests as you plan your trip.

Circular routes and the Rhine landscape

The circular route “Hauts de Mother,” marked by the Club Vosgien, starts at the Maison de la Wacht. From there, you can enjoy a 360-degree view of the Rhine; on a clear day, you can also see the Black Forest massif in Germany. If the views are a particular priority on your outing, this route offers a clear focus on the landscape.

“Les Berges du Rhin” is an 8 km circular route marked with the Club Vosgien’s yellow ring. It starts and ends in front of the Maison de la Wacht and passes through the forest and along the banks of the Rhine. Its length and circular layout offer a concrete guide for planning. Unlike “Hauts de Mother,” this route focuses on its course through the forest and along the river.

The “Promenade le long du Rhin” passes agricultural land, goes through the forest, follows former branches of the Rhine, and reaches the riverbanks. Along the way, you can observe wildlife, plants, and river traffic. The experiences offered by these routes therefore differ in their stated focus: panoramic views, a circular route, or varied landscapes and opportunities for observation.

The “Balade ludique à Mother” also combines walking with a challenge: it takes families through the streets of Mothern and features puzzles, clues, and the collection of evidence. The aim is to solve the challenge. For planning an outing, this is a different approach from routes offering views of the Rhine or opportunities to observe the landscape: here, the walk is shaped by playful puzzle-solving.

River heritage and local history

The Church of Notre-Dame de la Visitation was built in 1778; its bell tower dates from the 16th century. Another connection to the Rhine can be found at Place de la Wacht: the Mât des bateliers erected there commemorates the river’s important economic role for the villages along its banks. The banks of the Rhine at Mothern are also home to a rare myriameter stone at river kilometer 346.480, which forms part of the river’s heritage.

Mothern has two well-curbs with lever mechanisms, rare in Alsace. Water was drawn using a counterweight. The Musée de la Maison de la Wacht presents the permanent exhibition “Il était une fois le Rhin,” which explores ideas and imaginings about the Rhine. Here, the river is encountered not only as a landscape, but also as a subject of technology, history, and cultural imagination.

La grotte de Lourdes lies on the road to Neewiller. A couple from the village built it in 1901 as a place for reflection after losing two children shortly after their births. This story gives the site a personal and quiet historical background.

The wider river area is also part of understanding the landscape: the banks of the Rhine at Mothern belong to an 18 km stretch of free-flowing Rhine that runs along the five French Rhine communities of Beinheim, Seltz, Munchhausen, Mothern, and Lauterbourg. The Rhine is thus at once a landscape along the routes, a historical point of reference, and part of a longer stretch of river.
