When planning a stay in Kilstett, you can choose to focus on historical sites or routes. The Casemate de Kilstett, Canal Vauban and memorial sites represent different historical themes, while the Sentier découverte du Ried and the S’Rhinland cycle tour offer specific route options. If you are deciding between a walk and a longer cycle route, their respective distances provide a clear guide.

Casemate and Remembrance

The Casemate de Kilstett is a Maginot Line fortification built between 1932 and 1934. As part of the third line of fortifications, known as the village line, it was intended to block the routes between Kilstett and the Rhine forest. Its place in this line and its specific blocking mission describe two important aspects of the site: its military role and its connection to the routes mentioned.

A short guided tour is required to view the interior fittings. Check the visiting arrangements before you arrive.

The memorial sites also commemorate different things. The “Wall of Names” at the memorial honors the 133 victims of the Battle of Kilstett. The Monument de la Garde commemorates the men of the Republican Guard who fought in Kilstett. While the wall is dedicated to the victims, the monument commemorates the men of the Guard who fought.

Canal Vauban and the Church

The historic Canal Vauban was built in 1707. It connected the citadel of Strasbourg with Seltz and Fort-Louis via La Wantzenau and is also known as the “canal des français” or “canal des Pandours.” When placing it in its historical context, note its specific connection to the citadel of Strasbourg.

Its present-day function differs from that of this former waterway: the former Canal Vauban carries floodwater into the fields and provides refuge for animals. The year it was built and its historical connection describe the canal’s past; floodwater drainage and refuge for animals describe its current role. This makes it a way to experience Kilstett from both a historical and a landscape perspective.

The choir of Kilstett church dates from 1844/1845. Its features include paneling and painted, varnished scenes depicting the life of Jesus. The church also has a sundial made by Laurent Hommel. Here you can see both the design of the choir and a distinct work on the church itself.

Walk and Cycle Tour

The Sentier découverte du Ried starts at the football field in Kilstett. The walking trail is 6 kilometers long and rated easy; 11 themes are covered along the route. Its length, difficulty rating and themes give you specific information to help plan this walk. Check the local trail signs before setting out.

The permanent S’Rhinland cycle tour is associated with Kilstett. It has route options of 115, 120, 125 and 140 kilometers. Compared with the 6-kilometer walk, the difference in distance is clear: the four cycle routes give you several lengths to choose from, while the Sentier découverte du Ried is a shorter option on foot. Check the latest route documentation before setting off.
