Sil' – Local History and the Vasylivska Church
Accommodation in Sil'
Sil' brings together a historical connection to the Uzh and the Vasylivska Church, an architectural monument with a layered building history. This gives your trip a clear focus: local history and architecture. The church was altered over different periods, and its story also extends beyond Sil'.
Local History on the Uzh
Sil' was founded on the banks of the Uzh in 1599. The year of its founding and its location by the river provide two concise points of reference for placing the village in time and geography. The history of the Vasylivska Church began later: it was built in 1703, more than a century after Sil' was founded. These dates describe separate milestones and should not be conflated into a single building or founding history.
The church also connects Sil' with Sianky in Lviv Oblast. It was built there in 1703 as a three-domed church in the Boyko style. At the end of the 18th century, it was brought to Sil'; this probably happened in 1777. Its iconostasis was transported along with the church. Four pairs of oxen brought both to their present location. The history of the building therefore includes not only its construction, but also a later relocation.
The Building History of the Vasylivska Church
The present-day Vasylivska Church is a wooden structure made of spruce. Its three domes and its classification as Boyko-style are two distinctive features of the original building. The church was remodeled in 1834. It is worth considering this as a separate phase in its history: the remodeling added further, specifically described roof and tower forms to the building's earlier history.
A small tower with a Baroque finish was added above the narthex, the church's entrance porch. A miniature tower with a conical roof was added above the altar. A hipped roof was also created during the remodeling. This type of roof has sloping roof surfaces at the gable ends as well. The 1834 remodeling thus combined the hipped roof with two distinct tower forms: a tower with a Baroque finish above the narthex and a conical miniature tower above the altar.
The roof over the central log structure is another distinctive feature in the building's history: it is markedly curved and indicates the former position of a central pyramidal roof with bends. This form adds a reference to an earlier roof design to the account of the remodeling. Together, the domes, curved roof, and smaller towers create a nuanced picture of the architecture, without conflating the individual forms.
Putting Sil' in Context for Your Trip
If you choose travel destinations based on their history and architecture, Sil' offers a specific reason to explore a single building and how it has developed. The village's founding on the Uzh gives a different point of reference in time from the church's construction and later remodeling. This distinction can help you decide what interests you most about Sil': local history, architecture, or both?
If you would like to visit the Vasylivska Church in person, check in advance whether a visit is possible. This keeps choosing the destination separate from selecting a specific hotel.
