Shayan is a destination for travelers who want to include marked hiking routes, forested mountain slopes, and mineral water in their trip. If you are looking for a hotel in Shayan, these features can help you decide what to focus on during your stay: a marked route runs around Mount Shaian and up to its summit, ancient forest areas lie on the slopes of Shaian and Shaanykha, and the village has mineral water pump rooms and a sculpture celebrating mineral water.

Hiking Routes on Mount Shaian

The slopes of Mount Shaian are quite steep. A marked hiking route runs around the mountain and up to its summit. It starts at the mineral water pump room. The Shaian Ring walking trail is a short, also-marked route of 4.5 km that also starts at the pump room. Both trails therefore share the same starting point, but differ in their course: the Shaian Ring is described as a walking trail, while the other route combines a circuit of the mountain with a summit visit. When planning, you can weigh up a short walk against a route that includes the summit.

At an information board near Shaian, you will find a map and basic information. QR codes let you download routes to a smartphone. There are signposts along the way, and the routes are marked. “Forest furniture” provides places to rest along the trail. Conditions on the trails can change; check their current status before setting out.

Forests on the Mountain Slopes

Natural forest stands and quasi-primeval forests have been preserved on the slopes of the Shaian and Shaanykha mountains, including centuries-old oak and beech-hornbeam forests. These natural areas exist at a relatively short distance from developed areas. So Shayan’s natural side is not limited to summit trails: the composition and age of its forests also give the landscape a distinct character. If you are interested in forest landscapes, the forest types and old-growth stands here offer specific points of interest.

Mineral Water in Shaian

At the entrance to the spa resort of Shaian stands the sculpture “Kraplia Shaiana,” which symbolizes Shaian’s mineral water. You can taste mineral water at the village’s central pump room. Another pump room is located on the grounds of the “Shaian” sanatorium; visitors can use it, although access may be subject to the sanatorium’s conditions. The “Shaianska” mineral water is served at the sanatorium. If you are planning to taste the water at the central pump room, check in advance whether this will be possible on the day of your visit.

View Abandoned Tunnels from a Distance

Abandoned tunnels in the low mountains and forests of Shaian are another distinctive feature. They can be reached by walking trails, but entering the underground areas is not recommended; they can be viewed from a distance. On the slopes, the tunnels look like giant beehives. Conditions can change, so view the tunnels from a distance and follow the recommendation not to enter the underground areas.
