Stryzhavka’s historical sites include a memorial complex for the victims of National Socialism, an open-air exhibition of military equipment from the Second World War and two churches. Each highlights a different aspect: the memorial complex addresses occupation and remembrance, the exhibition military technology, and the churches architectural history and architecture. Their locations also need to be distinguished: the memorial complex and both churches are in Stryzhavka; the historic headquarters complex “Werwolf” was built in a wooded grove near the town.

Memorial Complex and the History of the Occupation

In Stryzhavka, the Historical Memorial Complex in Remembrance of the Victims of National Socialism includes the headquarters site and a mass grave. Prisoners of war and citizens of German-occupied countries who built the headquarters are buried there. The complex was established in 2011 as a branch of the Vinnytsia Regional Museum of Local Lore to commemorate the victims of the occupation regime.

Along the visitor route, information boards describe the occupation, the construction of the headquarters, its significance and its influence on the events of the Second World War. The subject matter therefore extends from the site and its history to its place in the events of the war. The boards cover both the construction of the headquarters and its significance and influence.

Headquarters Complex and Military Equipment

The historic German headquarters complex “Werwolf” was built in 1941 and 1942 in a wooded grove near Stryzhavka. It comprised around 20 wooden buildings and three above-ground reinforced-concrete bunkers. The wooden buildings and bunkers represent different types of construction within the complex. The years 1941 and 1942 refer to its construction.

The open-air military equipment exhibition in Stryzhavka displays a collection of rare military equipment from the Second World War. This includes a model of the German “Tiger” tank. The exhibition has a different focus from the memorial complex: here, the emphasis is on military equipment, while the memorial complex focuses on remembrance of the victims of National Socialism and the history of the occupation.

Churches and Architectural History

The Church of Our Lady of Sorrows has stood in the center of Stryzhavka since 1827. St. Nicholas Church is made of wood, has a cruciform floor plan and is a monument of local significance. It is also conveniently located on the bank of the Southern Bug. A cruciform floor plan describes the shape of the building when viewed from above; together with its wooden construction, this gives it a distinct architectural feature. The two churches can be classified according to different criteria: for one, the date and its location in the town center are significant; for the other, its design, material, heritage status and proximity to the river.

Three Dates, Three Different References

For a clear chronology, each year should be understood in its specific context. 1827 marks when the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows began to stand in the town center. 1941 and 1942 date the construction of the historic headquarters complex “Werwolf” near Stryzhavka. 2011 is the year the memorial complex was established as a branch of the regional museum. These refer to three different events: the existence of a church, the construction of a historic site and the founding of a memorial. This distinction helps separate local history, wartime events and later remembrance.
