Discover Rivne: Museums, Parks and Amber
Accommodation in Rivne
Rivne brings together regional collections, a historic reconstruction park and green spaces featuring water, paths and recreational facilities. When planning your trip, you can distinguish these places by their respective focus: Would you like to see exhibitions, explore Ukrainian history, or discover parks and their landscapes? This makes it easy to tailor your stay to the interests that matter to you.
Museums: Regional History and Amber
The Rivne Regional Museum of Local Lore offers themed tours and master classes. Its collection comprises more than 297,000 exhibits, over 20,000 of which are displayed in the permanent exhibition halls and at exhibitions. Collection figures may change over time. The museum thus combines extensive collections with activities that offer a themed way to explore the exhibits.
The Amber Museum in Rivne has a different focus: on display are pieces of amber up to 40 million years old, found in the Rivne region at different times, as well as amber jewelry. An amber amulet disc about 2,500 years old is described as the oldest amber object in Ukraine. Stones containing crystallized insects are also part of the exhibition. If you are interested in regional finds, you will find not only jewelry here, but also objects whose age and place of discovery offer a distinctive perspective on amber.
Parks Between Water, Garden Art and Recreation
Rivne City Hydropark is a water system in the Ustia River basin. An artificial canal connects it to the Basivkut Reservoir; it is fed by the Tynnivska and Boyarchyk tributaries. The Hydropark includes walking paths, bridges over waterways, an area for cycling, scootering and skateboarding, and a children's playground. Concrete sculptures covered in mosaics add another feature: they include “Neptune and the Mermaid,” “Weeping Crocodile” and “Snails.” The sculptures were installed for the city's 700th anniversary.
Taras Shevchenko Park offers a different way to experience the city's green spaces. It is a nationally significant 19th-century monument of landscape and garden art, covering about 32 hectares. Tree-lined avenues, lakes and flower beds shape the landscape; there are also children's playgrounds and rides. Park features may change over time. Compared with the Hydropark, the focus here is on historic garden art and the varied park landscape.
Zoo and Green Spaces
Rivne Zoo is home to 216 animal species. Of these, 108 are listed on the International Red List and 13 in the Red Book of Ukraine; animal numbers may change over time. The zoo also includes the remains of an old orchard and a 4.7-hectare natural forest, considered the only natural forest complex within the city. Information boards let you learn more about the individual animals; you can also book a guided tour. The zoo thus combines information about the animals with a landscape area of its own.
Ostvytsia: History and Hands-On Activities
The Ostvytsia historical reconstruction park is in the Basivkutskyi district on Marusi Churai Street, next to Basivkut Hillfort. The hillfort is considered an archaeological monument of national significance. Ostvytsia presents Ukrainian history and traditions through performances, fairs, exhibitions, master classes, lectures, workshops and other participatory activities. Archery is also available: children and adults can learn it there, with participation conditions depending on the visit.
The warmer months, from April to October, are recommended for visiting the Ostvytsia museum. Check the current visitor regulations before travelling. This seasonal guidance helps you plan when to visit, while the variety of activities shows that Ostvytsia offers not only exhibitions but also hands-on experiences.
A City Meeting Place
For decades, Independence Boulevard has been considered a place for romantic dates; parents and grandparents relax on its benches. It complements the museums and parks with a public space also associated with everyday recreation. Together, these destinations show several sides of Rivne: collections and history, landscaped green spaces, waterscapes and shared urban spaces.
