Vylkove – Churches, Canals and the Danube
Accommodation in Vylkove
Vylkove between the town center, canals and the Danube
A stay in Vylkove can include several specific themes: the visitor center of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve, historic churches and monuments, local cuisine, and routes and trips along the water. You can focus on nature and regional studies, religious buildings, food culture, or the view from a boat. The town’s features offer a range of ways to explore these themes.
Visitor center in the town center
The visitor center of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve is located in the center of Vylkove, at 4 Petra-Sahaidachnoho Street. It has information, environmental education, natural history, and regional studies exhibitions. The range of topics therefore extends from environmental education and natural history to regional studies. If you are planning a visit, check the center’s visitor regulations in advance.
Churches, square and architecture
A monument to a Lipovan stands in St. Nicholas Square. Vylkove’s historic buildings include the Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas, the Old Believer Church of St. Nicholas, and the Old Believer Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God. The two St. Nicholas churches are distinct buildings: the architecture of the Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas combines Baroque and modern styles; the Old Believer Church of St. Nicholas is a separate historic landmark in the town.
The Old Believer Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker stands where the full-flowing Starostambulskyi Arm meets the Bilhorodskyi Arm in the town center. Visitors arriving by water can see it from the Danube. The churches therefore stand out for different features: the architecture of the Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas, and the Old Believer church’s location where the two arms meet and its visibility from the Danube.
Vylkove’s cuisine
Local cuisine includes stuffed peppers and cabbage rolls filled with fish instead of meat. Other dishes and products include fish soup served in cups, Salamur sauce, and “Novak” wine. The culinary selection thus ranges from stuffed dishes and soup to sauce and wine. The fish filling in the cabbage rolls and the way the soup is served give this theme a particularly distinctive character. Alongside the buildings and waterways, the cuisine offers another aspect to consider when planning your stay.
Canals and boat trips
In Vylkove, you can travel through the city by boat. Pedestrian walkways run along the canals; some can be opened to let boats pass. This gives you two ways to get around by the water: along the canal walkways and by traveling through the city. A boat trip in the nearby area also offers views of the floodplain landscape and can take you as far as “Kilometer Zero,” at the mouth of the Danube where it flows into the Black Sea.
An excursion to the Danube Delta is designed as an outing after a meal and passes through an area that partly borders the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve. It adds a regional perspective on the Delta to Vylkove’s local features. For travel planning, check the center’s visitor regulations before visiting and confirm current availability for excursions.
