Vyshhorod: Archaeology, Museums and Winter Experiences
Accommodation in Vyshhorod
For a trip to Vyshhorod, you can easily narrow down your interests: archaeological history, museum collections, and the riverside landscape offer different focal points. The Vyshhora ski resort, with its conveyor-belt lift and snow tubing run, is another option to consider.
Hillfort Site and Archaeological Traces
The Vyshhorod hillfort site, recorded in chronicles, dates from the 9th to the 13th century. Its preserved cultural layers contain remains of pottery kilns, metalworking workshops, and residential and utility buildings. The archaeological evidence therefore ranges from crafts to domestic and economic life.
Pottery is a particular focus. The grounds of the Museum of Ancient Rus Pottery preserve the remains of a pottery kiln, which have been incorporated into the museum. The museum also displays Trypillian pottery and Early Iron Age pottery found in Vyshhorod and the district. Finds from different periods are thus presented side by side.
You can also visit a collection of products from the Mezhyhirya Porcelain and Faience Factory, where printing was first applied to tableware. The regional collection includes traditional clothing and embroidered towels from Kyiv Polissia. Outdoors, the museum displays works by folk craftspeople, as well as examples of traditional beekeeping and boatbuilding. Practical workshops on the pottery wheel, clay modelling, and making objects from wax are offered; check with the museum for current availability.
Museums, Collections and History
The Vyshhorod Historical Museum displays a fragment of a Scandinavian brooch from the first half of the 10th century and the seal of Prince Iziaslav Yaroslavich from the 11th to 12th century. The collection also includes an 11th-century spindle whorl, a 10th-century reliquary cross, a deer-antler egg from the 11th to 12th century, and Scythian arrowheads from the 1st millennium BC. The dates therefore range from pre-Christian times to the Middle Ages. As collections and displays may change, check the current visitor arrangements before your visit.
The Vyshhorod Historical and Cultural Reserve presents the history of pottery-making and a preserved 11th-century pottery kiln, described as the only surviving example in Eastern Europe. An ethnographic collection comprises household items and work tools from the 19th and early 20th centuries; the reserve also features an exhibition of dugout boats. These themes add later everyday objects and traditional ways of working to the picture provided by the archaeological finds.
The reserve also features a copy of the wonder-working Vyshhorod Icon of the Mother of God and information about where Boris and Hlib were buried. They are described as the first Orthodox saints and the heavenly patrons of Vyshhorod. One listed historical walking tour of the city leads to the Church of Saints Boris and Hlib at 11a Kalnyshevskoho Street.
Riverside Landscape and Winter Activities
The riverside landscape includes the slopes of Vyshhorod Hill and adjacent preserved sections of the Dnipro floodplain, which are of great natural and historical value. A gull sculpture dating from 1968 stands on the Chaika waterfront promenade. It points towards the hydroelectric power station and the pumped-storage power station.
The Vyshhora ski resort has a conveyor-belt lift and a snow tubing run. Check whether the facilities are currently operating before you travel. This way, you can choose your destination based on specific museum and historical themes or winter activities, without confusing these different focal points.
