Sadove is in Kyiv Oblast. In the village center, a mass grave and a nearby cross commemorate the history of war and faith. The settlement developed around peat extraction in the late 1920s.

From Peat Extraction to the Story Behind the Name

At the end of 1928, construction began in Sadove on the first barracks for people working in peat extraction. The area was mainly settled in 1929. The name “Sadove” came into use in the early 1950s. At that time, fruit trees and shrubs were planted across 25 hectares; the garden bloomed in spring 1955. On May 22, 1957, the settlement was officially named Sadove by decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Ukrainian SSR. The name’s early use and its official designation therefore took place in different years.

Remembrance in the Center

In the center of Sadove is a mass grave of Soviet Army soldiers who died in 1943 during the fighting to liberate the village from the German-fascist occupiers. A designation recorded in 2021 also identifies it as a mass grave of Soviet Army soldiers and a monument to fellow citizens who fell in the Great Patriotic War. In 2000, a cross was erected in a green space beside the mass grave to mark the 2,000th anniversary of the birth of Christ.

Religious History and Village Life

In 2001, premises in part of the former eight-year school building were made available to Sadove’s religious community for services in honor of Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki, the Great Martyr. On May 25, 2019, Sadove held celebrations marking the 90th anniversary of the village’s founding; these celebrations were a one-time event. On the morning of this anniversary, a Divine Liturgy was celebrated at the Church of Saint Demetrius in Sadove. Sadove residents celebrate their church feast day on November 8.

On February 17, 1975, the Sadove village council was established, with its seat in the village. The municipal chronicle also reports that Sadove was fully supplied with gas between 1975 and 1980. The village profile describes a later expansion involving private plots for homes and outbuildings. A historical administrative classification places Sadove within the 75-kilometer zone of Kyiv; it does not specify a road distance or travel time.

Planning Your Stay

If you plan to visit the religious sites, check current service times and visitor arrangements in advance. The church feast date alone does not constitute an invitation to a public event program. So, if you plan to travel for the feast, ask the community directly about the current schedule. You should also confirm the location and access arrangements for the former school premises before your trip. Treat a visit to the mass grave as a visit to a memorial site, and be considerate of mourners. For an overnight stay, you can search for hotels in Sadove and check each property’s location and travel arrangements.
