Knyazhychi lies on the left bank of the Irpin. Two useful landmarks for finding your way around the village are its main Vasylkiv–Kniazhychi–Luka road and Heroes’ Alley in the village center. Other points of interest include the Christian Church of the Exaltation of the Cross and archaeological remains from various periods. When considering Knyazhychi as a travel destination, you can distinguish between its geographical location, church history, the mass grave, and traces of different archaeological periods.

Location and Orientation

The paved Vasylkiv–Kniazhychi–Luka road is the village’s main road and connects Kniazhychi to Zhornivka via a concrete bridge over the Irpin. The riverside location and road connection offer different ways to orient yourself: the left bank describes where Kniazhychi lies in relation to the river, while the bridge connects it to Zhornivka. Together, they locate the village both by the river and along the specifically named route.

Local History and Remembrance

Heroes’ Alley is in the village center, next to a mass grave of soldiers from the Second World War. Its location and immediate proximity to the grave go together when considering this part of local history: the alley is centrally located, while the mass grave provides a specific link to the Second World War. It is therefore a historical landmark alongside archaeological traces from other periods.

The Christian Church of the Exaltation of the Cross offers a different point of reference in time: it opened in 2001, and the ceremony was led by Patriarch Filaret of Kyiv. This date belongs to the village’s more recent history and can be clearly distinguished from the much older archaeological periods.

Archaeological Traces Through Time

In the southern part of Kniazhychi, an archaeological settlement is associated with the Bronze Age and the 1st century BC. In the southwestern part, another settlement dates from the 11th to the 13th century AD. An archaeological burial site within the village dates from the 11th to the 15th century AD and requires further investigation. These three archaeological sites differ both in their location within the village and in their dates: two are settlements, while the third is a burial site.

The two medieval periods overlap, but they are not the same: the settlement dates up to the 13th century, while the burial site dates up to the 15th century. This makes it possible to compare the timespans of the two different archaeological sites.
