Discover Khmelnytskyi: Museums and City Routes
Accommodation in Khmelnytskyi
Khmelnytskyi can be explored through its museums, themed city routes and M. Chekman Park. The published routes focus on different subjects: city history, architecture, photography, trade and education. During your stay, you can choose whether to explore a museum theme in depth or discover the city on a walk.
City routes through Khmelnytskyi
The “10 Museums in a Row” route is designed for independent exploration of Khmelnytskyi and is recommended for tourists and residents alike. One of its stops is the Khmelnytskyi Museum of City History. If you follow this route, check the latest details for each museum before visiting.
The architecture of the historic centre is the focus of the 1.5-hour walking tour “Romance of Proskuriv Art Nouveau.” It introduces notable and popular cultural heritage buildings on several streets near the pedestrian zone. A different approach is offered by the one-hour puzzle route “In Search of the Medieval Fortress of Ploskuriv,” which leads to places where fortifications dating from the 16th to 18th centuries are thought to have stood. The first tour focuses on architecture and buildings, while the second involves searching for possible traces of earlier fortifications.
The 40-minute walk “In Search of the Castle of Ploskuriv” follows the riverside path and passes through M. Chekman Park. Along the way, it covers the settlement of Ploskuriv, an old crossing, the riverside neighbourhoods and the origins of today’s park. Another one-hour guided tour, “Heart of the City,” follows Proskurivska Street. If it includes a visit to one of the art, city history or photographic art museums, the tour lasts an additional 30 minutes. The one-hour route “Commercial Proskuriv” follows Hrushevskoho Street and explores the history of trade, industry and educational institutions.
Museums: city history, art and photography
At the Khmelnytskyi Museum of City History, visitors can photograph and touch the exhibits. A multilingual audio guide provides information about the exhibition. If you wish to use these services, check the current terms before your visit. The museum can also be included as a stop on the independent “10 Museums in a Row” route.
The Khmelnytskyi Regional Art Museum is devoted to contemporary Ukrainian art. This sets it apart from the Museum of City History and the Museum-Studio of Photographic Art.
The Khmelnytskyi Museum-Studio of Photographic Art features the permanent exhibitions “Photographers of Proskuriv from the Late 19th to the Early 20th Century” and “Old-New City.” The photographs show notable places, houses, streets and city views from the past and present. Another permanent exhibition is devoted to historical photographic equipment: it includes almost all cameras mass-produced in the Soviet Union, as well as numerous cameras from international manufacturers, dating from the late 19th century to the digital age. The museum-studio is described as the first and only museum of its kind in Ukraine.
M. Chekman Park and water activities
M. Chekman Park has a Ferris wheel that operates seasonally and offers views of the city from above. Check whether it will be operating during your visit. The park’s animal area is home to around 140 animals, including bears, raccoons, birds, rodents, emus, miniature pigs, peacocks and foxes. This is an approximate figure; the animals kept there may change.
Water activities in Khmelnytskyi include catamarans, a motorboat and water walking balls. If you plan to try any of these, check in advance whether they are currently operating.
