Kamyanska Sich National Park lies in the centre of Kherson Oblast, on the right bank of the Dnipro. Its territory includes the Kamyanska and Mylivska gorges, as well as a Dnipro river terrace between Chervonyi Maiak and Kachkarivka. This brings together three clearly distinct landscape features in one protected area: riverbanks, gorges and a river terrace. This offers practical guidance for planning your trip: the park is shaped not only by its location on the river, but also by the named gorges and the terrace.

Dunes, Protected Areas and Biodiversity

In the Oleshky Sands, the landscape is shaped by wind-formed barchans. Some are more than 20 metres high and more than 40 metres wide. Oleshky Sands National Park includes the “Oleshky Desert” and “Wonderland of the Oleshky Sands” eco-trails. If you plan to take one of these trails, check beforehand whether it is currently accessible.

Biodiversity is also part of the national park’s profile: more than a hundred rare and endangered species of plants, fungi, lichens and animals occur there. They are listed in the Red Data Book of Ukraine, the European Red List, the IUCN Red List and the Red Data Book of Kherson Oblast. Thus, in the Oleshky Sands, striking landscape features sit alongside the theme of species conservation. The lists range from the Red Data Book of Kherson Oblast to the European Red List.

Askania-Nova Biosphere Reserve covers just over 33,000 hectares; one third of it is a strictly protected steppe zone. The reserve also includes a dendrological park of national importance and an acclimatisation zoological park. Its animal collection is considered a national cultural asset of Ukraine.

Historical Connections at Kamyanska Sich

Kamyanska Sich National Park also has a clear point of cultural interest: the historic site of Kamyanska Sich lies within the park. There is also a monument of history and archaeology there. This places landscape and history side by side when exploring the area. If you are planning a visit, check current accessibility beforehand.

Which focus suits your trip?

The protected areas each have a different thematic focus. Kamyanska Sich combines riverbanks and gorges with historical connections; the Oleshky Sands are known for wind-formed barchans and the protection of endangered species; Askania-Nova brings together a steppe zone, a dendrological park and a zoological collection. This comparison can help you tailor your trip to your interests. If you are looking for a hotel in Kherson Oblast, first decide which of these landscapes and themes you would like to focus on, and include the specific places in your travel plans.
