Discover Kharkiv: Museums and Leisure
Accommodation in Kharkiv
Kharkiv offers several distinct ways to plan a trip: leisure activities at the Central Park of Culture and Recreation, archaeological and natural history collections, literary history, and a cultural monument of national significance. You can therefore easily identify what interests you: Would you like to take part in an activity, explore natural history or discover historical collections? The options differ not only in subject but also in format—from hands-on activities and collections and exhibitions to a recognized cultural monument.
Leisure at the Central Park of Culture and Recreation
At Dino Park in M. Gorky Central Park of Culture and Recreation, visitors can dig for hidden prehistoric reptile skeletons free of charge. This is a hands-on activity, unlike the museum collections. The Medieval Square is home to an entertainment center for children that offers mazes, slides, a climbing wall, shooting galleries, arcade games and other entertainment year-round. The Medieval Square is also the park’s main venue for celebrations, festivals, discos and public festivities. The park’s Ferris wheel is 55 meters high. The Central Park of Culture and Recreation is currently temporarily closed; check access before planning a visit.
Museums with a range of collections
The Archaeological Museum of V. N. Karazin Kharkiv National University has significant collections of objects from the Bronze Age, the Scythian period, antiquity, and the Chernyakhov and Saltovo cultures. This variety brings together different periods and cultural groups, making the museum a clear highlight for travelers interested in archaeology.
The Museum of Natural History brings together scientific collections of more than 250,000 exhibits from around the world. Its exhibitions are spread across 23 halls and four departments: geology, invertebrates and vertebrates, the evolution of the organic world, and nature conservation. Its scope therefore ranges from geological topics to animal groups, evolution and nature conservation. The scale and organization offer different points of reference: the number of items describes the collection’s size, while the four departments show the breadth of the exhibition’s subject matter. This structure is also useful for finding your way around: the Archaeological Museum brings together periods and cultural groups, while the natural history museum organizes its exhibitions by specialist subject. This can help you decide from the outset whether you would rather focus on historical cultures or natural sciences.
Literary history and cultural heritage
The Kharkiv Literary Museum offers a different perspective. Its key collections include artifacts from the Executed Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s, the Sixtiers movement, the Ukrainian resistance movement of the 1960s to 1980s, and the early 1990s. These periods give the collections a historical structure: alongside literary and cultural movements, specific decades help visitors find their bearings. This is a different thematic perspective from the archaeological cultures or natural history departments.
Derzhprom is recognized as a cultural monument of national significance. Check current access arrangements before visiting.
