Lyucha: Mountains, Waterfalls and the Church of the Ascension
Accommodation in Lyucha
Lyucha lies in mountainous terrain at 458 m above sea level. The village stretches along the Liuchka River and its right tributaries, Rushor and Akra. Mountain scenery and river courses thus serve as geographical reference points side by side. Specific natural and cultural highlights of the destination include Huk Waterfall, Lake Viknyshcha and the Church of the Ascension.
Mountains and Waterfalls
Mount Kamin rises above Lyucha; at 916 m, Palyta is Lyucha’s highest mountain. By contrast, 458 m above sea level is the elevation of the village. The figures therefore refer to different geographical points: the settlement on the one hand and the highest mountain on the other. This distinguishes the village’s elevation from the mountain height in its mountainous surroundings.
Huk Waterfall lies on the Rushir River and is a natural monument in a hamlet of Lyucha with the same name. It is situated in a 20 m-wide gorge and is 4 m high. These measurements describe different features: the width of the ravine and the waterfall’s drop. The river, hamlet and gorge place Huk in the landscape of Lyucha.
Another waterfall lies below Mount Puhachivka, near Lyucha. It was formed when the course of the Rushir River was diverted and is considered the largest and most beautiful waterfall in the area around the village. At Huk, the gorge and drop define its setting; for the waterfall below Puhachivka, its formation and position in the surrounding area are the key points.
In the area around Lyucha, Rushir Waterfall is considered a hydrological natural monument of local significance.
Church of the Ascension
The Church of the Ascension in Lyucha was built in 1844 and consecrated in 1846. The sequence is clear: construction was followed by consecration two years later.
The church is built of logs and has six domes. Its ground plan is cross-shaped, with a square crossing and narrow side arms. The crossing is the central intersection of the ground plan; the cross shape is thus defined by a square center and narrow side sections.
A tent-shaped dome with a lantern and finial sits on an octagonal base above the nave. The roofs have six finials in total. The church also has six domes: domes and finials are distinct architectural features. The cross-shaped ground plan and the structure of the nave thus complement one another in describing the church.
Lake and Arboretum
Lake Viknyshcha is a place to relax. Here, the focus is on spending time by the lake, while the waterfalls are described by their location, measurements or formation. Together with the river landscape and mountains, Viknyshcha provides a distinct natural setting within Lyucha.
An arboretum is located in Horishnii Kut in Lyucha, near the forestry office below Mount Nyadzhyn. Its location is identified by these named reference points: Horishnii Kut, the forestry office and Mount Nyadzhyn.
