Cherkasy Oblast: Park Landscapes and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Cherkasy Oblast
In Cherkasy Oblast, different travel interests lead to specific destinations: landscape park design in Uman, the archaeological heritage of the Trypillia culture, and historic sites in Kaniv. This thematic distinction is a useful starting point when searching for hotels. You can first consider what you want your stay to focus on.
Uman: Landscape Park and Activities on the Water
The Sofiyivka National Dendrological Park is located on the outskirts of Uman in Cherkasy Oblast and covers an area of up to 180 hectares. Its design as a landscape park brings together water, earth, stones, and plants with architectural structures and sculptures. Natural elements and designed forms come together here; the park is an example of landscape park design that combines nature and art.
Visitor activities include horseback rides accompanied by an instructor. Visitors can go out on the Upper Pond in boats, pedal boats, and the Sofiya ship. This means that, alongside the park’s design, there are also various ways to spend time on the water. There is a clear rule for walks: they are permitted only on the routes designated by the institution.
Trypillia Heritage: Monuments, Collections, and Interpretation
The Trypillian Culture State Historical and Cultural Reserve includes 11 Trypillia culture monuments in Cherkasy Oblast. These include the large settlements of Talianky, Maidanecke, Dobrovody, and Chychyrkozivka. The scientific collections contain more than 10,000 museum objects from 46 Trypillia settlements in Ukraine. Thus, the monuments in the region are complemented by collection objects whose origins span numerous settlements.
The reserve was founded in 2002 on the basis of the large Trypillia settlement of Talianky. Talianky is therefore both one of the large settlements mentioned and the foundation on which the reserve was established. Trypillia heritage is presented through museum exhibitions, festivals, and traditional “Trypillian Toloky.” The subject thus ranges from specific archaeological sites and museum objects to cultural forms of interpretation.
Kaniv: Shevchenko and Regional History
The Shevchenko National Reserve is located on Chernecha Hill, also known as Tarasova Hill, near the Dnipro and within the Kaniv Hills. The reserve’s cultural sites include Taras Shevchenko’s grave and the State Taras Shevchenko Museum. These named sites establish the connection to Shevchenko within the reserve; their location also describes the reserve’s place in the landscape.
The Kaniv Historical Museum offers another historical perspective. Its permanent exhibition presents the history of the Kaniv region from the Paleolithic period to the time of Kyivan Rus. While the Shevchenko National Reserve focuses on the remembrance of Taras Shevchenko, the Historical Museum exhibition spans a broad period of the region’s history.
Choose a Hotel Search Based on Your Travel Focus
Landscape park design and activities on the Upper Pond make Uman a natural point of reference; the monuments and collections of the Trypillia culture offer a distinct archaeological focus. In Kaniv, Shevchenko sites are connected with the history of the region. Focus your search on the place that suits your travel plans.
