Veľké Kostoľany: Churches, Chapels and Landscape
Accommodation in Veľké Kostoľany
The landscape and sacred architectural heritage give Veľké Kostoľany two distinct themes for a stay. The village lies in the valley of the Výtok stream and on the right-bank terrace of the Dudváh. The Chtelnička stream flows through the Kostolianska Valley. These features describe different parts of the landscape. The “Nad Holeškou” cycle route passes through Veľké Kostoľany; check its current route before planning your trip.
The Church of St. Vitus and its architectural history
One notable historic building is the Church of St. Vitus, which dates from the late 12th century. Its architectural history includes further clearly dated stages: two semicircular side chapels were added in 1736. The Neoclassical main altar dates from 1815 and features an image of St. Vitus. This distinguishes the church’s origins, the later addition and the altar chronologically; the year 1815 refers to the main altar, not to the construction of the church. The information about the chapels also describes both their shape and the year they were added. This gives a more precise picture of the different architectural elements without reducing them to a single construction date.
Chapels, pilgrimage and places of worship
The parish chapel offers a distinct architectural and religious feature. Built of fired bricks in 1768, it is Baroque in style. The Eucharist is kept there for public adoration and to strengthen the faithful. Its material, construction date, style and function each provide a different clue to understanding the chapel.
The Hájska Chapel is associated with an annual pilgrimage. It takes place each year on the Sunday around 8 September, the Feast of the Nativity of Mary, and is attended by faithful from nearby communities. As the Sunday date changes each year, check the date for the year in question before making plans.
Other sacred sites are located at the cemetery: the Stations of the Cross run along both sides of the cemetery path leading to the Church of St. Vitus. The Lourdes Grotto is at the cemetery entrance and was consecrated on 15 August 1954. Alongside the recurring pilgrimage date, there are also site-specific places of worship that differ in their location and history.
Cycle route and leisure facilities
The relevant conditions are also important when planning leisure activities. In 2024, the children’s playground was open daily to children and their parents. The multi-purpose sports court was available to the public in the afternoons through a free booking with the court manager; the athletics track was free for public use. The differences therefore concern both opening times and access arrangements. This information applies to 2024; check before visiting whether the conditions of use are still in effect.
