Discover Šúrovce
Accommodation in Šúrovce
Šúrovce combines a rural, agriculture-oriented setting with distinctive cultural and festive traditions. When planning your trip, the main highlights are the classicist Church of St Michael the Archangel, celebrations in the municipality, and historical traces around Veľké Šúrovce. The two municipal sand tennis courts are another specific local feature. Depending on whether you are more interested in architectural history, local customs or the archaeological past, a different part of the area’s history may take centre stage.
Rural character and agriculture
The municipality of Šúrovce has a rural landscape whose character is clearly shaped by agriculture. This defines the area as a whole and provides a point of reference distinct from individual churches, monuments and celebrations. When comparing different destinations for your stay, you can therefore take Šúrovce’s rural character into account alongside its cultural attractions.
Church and historical memorials
The Church of St Michael the Archangel is classicist in style and was built between 1793 and 1811 on the site of an older religious building. Its furnishings combine late Baroque and classicist elements, including a late Baroque side altar, a classicist pulpit, a classicist baptismal font and a painting of the Crucifixion. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. If you plan to visit the interior, check access in advance.
A war memorial stands near the parish church. In Veľké Šúrovce, there is also a stone wayside cross: an older field cross with a more recent Corpus of Christ. The inscription names Šišák Michal and his wife Terézia Zeman as its donors. The church, war memorial and wayside cross relate to different religious and historical themes, adding further local perspectives to the architectural one.
Local celebrations throughout the year
Apples take centre stage at the traditional Jablkové hody, where sweet and savoury dishes are available to sample. Another festive tradition is the Hody in the village district of Veľké Šúrovce, held in September. The two celebrations offer different points to consider when planning your trip: Jablkové hody focus on apples and tastings, while the Hody in the village district take place in September. If you would like to plan your trip around either celebration, check the dates for your intended stay.
Tennis courts and travel planning
There are two municipal sand tennis courts in Školská Street, within the municipality. Municipal operating rules for both courts were approved in July 2025. If you would like to include the facility in your travel plans, check access arrangements in the operating rules before you arrive. This lets you take this specific sporting amenity into account without assuming a particular access arrangement or playing time.
Archaeological traces and early records
The area around Veľké Šúrovce has archaeological evidence from several periods. Settlement is documented as far back as the Neolithic. There are also finds from the Roman-Barbarian period and evidence of settlement during the Great Moravian period. These findings point to different historical periods and complement the written records with evidence from earlier times.
The first written records of Veľké Šúrovce and Zemianske Šúrovce date from 1241 and 1256. Taken together, the archaeological evidence and medieval written records offer different perspectives on local history: the former reach back to much earlier periods, while the latter refer to the two places in the 13th century. When planning your trip, you can weigh this historical focus alongside the church, festive traditions and agriculture-oriented landscape.
