Senica: Cultural history and routes to Kunovská priehrada
Accommodation in Senica
Historic churches, museum exhibitions and routes towards Kunovská priehrada offer different ways to spend time in Senica. When looking for a hotel, it helps to plan according to whether you are mainly interested in architectural history and museum topics, or would like to include a route and the recreational area.
Churches and historic buildings
The Evangelical Church in Senica is a Neoclassical toleration church, built in 1783 and 1784. Its tower was added later: in 1794, it was incorporated into the gabled façade of the church building. This makes it possible to distinguish the church’s construction period from the later addition.
The Roman Catholic parish church of the Virgin Mary dates from 1631. It was originally Evangelical and became Catholic in 1654. The statue of St. Florian is also a historic landmark: it dates from the second half of the 18th century and is registered as an immovable national cultural monument in the Slovak Republic. Sokolovňa adds to this selection as a restored 19th-century summer house, also registered as a national cultural monument.
Exhibitions: from the town model to archaeology
The Stará Senica exhibition has been part of the museum’s permanent exhibitions since 2020. Its 3D town model shows the historic centre of Senica around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. It also depicts historic buildings that no longer exist in the town today. The model thus focuses on an earlier appearance of the centre, not just on individual surviving buildings.
An archaeological exhibition broadens the historical perspective. It documents the settlement of Senica throughout all periods of human history. Its topics include part of a woolly mammoth tusk, discovered during the construction of Kunovská priehrada and considered a possible indication of hunting. This interpretation is explicitly presented as a possibility. The exhibitions therefore cover a range of topics, from the town’s appearance around 1900 to archaeological traces of earlier settlement.
The Škodáčkov Mill near Pivák
The Škodáčkov Mill near Pivák is open to the public; visiting arrangements may change, so check them before your visit. Visitors can view preserved technical equipment in the mill. Its themes include the history of milling, traditional technical crafts and the history of Čáčov. The mill therefore offers a different way to explore the local past than the churches and exhibitions: here, technical equipment and crafts take centre stage.
Two routes with different starting points
The Náučný chodník Senica–Kunovská priehrada is five kilometres long, running from Senica Town Park towards Kunovská priehrada and along the Teplica stream. Nine information boards line the route. It ends at an interactive environmental corner for children, which introduces them to nature and its inhabitants through play.
Another option is the Senica–Kunovská priehrada route. It starts at Senica’s central bus station and leads to the recreational area after 5.5 kilometres. The differences to consider are therefore clear: the educational trail is five kilometres long and runs along the Teplica stream; the other route starts at the bus station and ends at the recreational area.
Kunovská priehrada recreational area
The recreational area includes a sandy beach with parasols. There are also seasonal amenities: the boathouse rents out water attractions, and the sports area has a rental service. Availability may vary. If you plan to include the recreational area in your visit, you can take into account the route distance from the bus station and check the seasonal amenities before visiting.
