Povoda: History and Festivals
Accommodation in Povoda
For a stay in Povoda, the local history and recurring events offer two practical starting points. The historical timeline runs from the first written mention in 1260 to the merger of the local districts in 1940; the event calendar ranges from the Hodové slávnosti in April to the Obecné dni in August. If you are looking for a hotel in Povoda, you can choose your travel dates based on whether the town’s history or a particular event period matters more to you.
Local history across several periods
The settlement is first documented in a document from 1260 under the name Poda Ety. In an entry from 1455, King Ladislav V. transferred the settlement to Poda-Ethelom. The Póda family owned it until the end of the 18th century. Another turning point came in 1940: Povoda was formed by merging the local districts of Povoda, Čenkesfa and Lidértejed. The Slovak name Povoda has been in use since 1948. These milestones link early written mentions and ownership history with later changes to the town.
The area’s former uses and landscape are also part of its local history. At the beginning of the 19th century, a steam mill was built in Povoda, where it remained in operation until the beginning of the 20th century. Zöldfa was historically a marshy area; a wooden bridge crossed the terrain over a small canal. The former marshland was drained and is now built up. Povoda is also home to the Church of St. John Paul II (Kostol sv. Jána Pavla II). Together, these examples show different aspects of local history: a former mill, changes to the landscape and a named building. Local sports history also has a dated milestone: FK Povoda won the 3rd-class championship in the Dunajská Streda area in 2007.
Recurring events throughout the year
The Obecné dni have been held regularly since 2000 as a two-day event in August. The programme includes a wide range of cultural activities and musical performances. The Hodové slávnosti have a different calendar date: they take place every year in April on the feast of Saint George. The Žitnoostrovská výstava and the bonifikácia psov are also held regularly in Povoda.
To choose when to travel, you can compare the two festivals with their familiar seasonal dates: the Obecné dni take place over two days in August, while the Hodové slávnosti are held in April on the feast of Saint George. This lets you first decide which period better suits your plans. The exact event dates may vary, so check the details of the festival that interests you before planning your trip.
