Svidník offers a range of ways to shape your stay: folk architecture and art, cultural and historical themes, places of remembrance, and panoramic views over the town. If you are looking for hotels in Svidník, you can plan your trip around whichever of these aspects interests you most.

Folk Architecture and Ukrainian Art

The Svidník open-air museum covers around 11 hectares and features about 50 examples of folk architecture. They come from various Rusyn and Ukrainian localities in eastern Slovakia. The focus here is therefore on the region’s building culture, while the origins of the exhibits extend beyond Svidník. The approximate area and number of objects also give an idea of the museum’s scale.

The Galéria Dezidera Millyho offers a different perspective. Its permanent exhibition traces the development of folk and professional visual art by Ukrainians in Slovakia, from the 16th century to the present day. A rare collection of icons is a particular highlight. The icons are among the oldest and most valuable objects in the collection of the SNM – Múzea ukrajinskej kultúry.

The cultural and historical exhibition of the SNM – MUK in Svidník complements these artistic themes with a broader historical framework. It provides an overview of settlement, the economy and state administration, as well as the social, national and cultural development of the ethnic group in focus, from the earliest times to the present day. The focus of each venue is clearly distinct: folk architecture at the open-air museum, visual art at the gallery, and historical life and society at the cultural and historical exhibition.

Places of Remembrance and Military Equipment

The Soviet Army Monument, together with its military cemetery, is a listed monument forming part of the national cultural monument “Dukelské bojisko”. The monument complex was entered in the Central Register of the Monument Fund on 27 February 1961. This designation gives the site a specific connection to official cultural heritage protection and distinguishes it from the exhibitions on art and folk culture.

Park bojovej techniky also focuses on the wartime and post-war periods, but through exhibits: on display are 17 museum objects featuring heavy armoured vehicles and artillery and military aviation equipment from the Soviet, German and Czechoslovak armed forces. Anyone interested in material evidence from this period will find a different perspective here than at the monument and military cemetery.

Cultural Event and Views over the Town

The Slávnosti rusínsko-ukrajinskej kultúry have been held in Svidník since 1956 and take place every year in mid-June. The exact dates may vary. If you would like to include the festival in your travel plans, check the dates for the relevant year.

Near Svidník, the Vyhliadková veža with Útulňa offers panoramic views over the town from a height of almost 13 metres. The view stretches from the Soviet Army Monument to the Osy forest complex. The tower’s height and the landmarks described make this viewpoint a different way to experience the town than its museums and places of remembrance.

The Vyhliadková veža is easily accessible year-round for families with children, older people, cyclists, cross-country skiers and walkers. If you are part of one of these visitor groups, this viewpoint is one of the specific ways described to see Svidník from above.
