Tvarožná lies southeast of Kežmarok in the Vrbovská Upland, in the Poprad Basin and at the northwestern foot of the Levočské planiny in the Levočské vrchy. Two themes shape your travel plans: the architectural history preserved in the village and an easy walk from Vrbov to Tvarožná. The path through a pine forest up to meadows above the village adds a connection with the landscape to exploring its churches and burgher houses. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Tvarožná, you can consider whether the historic buildings, the walk, or both should shape your stay.

History and architecture

Tvarožná exercised municipal rights from 1271 and was administered under German Saxon law. Several original burgher houses dating from the 17th to the 19th century have been preserved; a Baroque sandstone column topped by a statue of the Immaculata was also erected in 1730. The former points to the system of administration, the houses to burgher life, and the column to a religious monument. Different aspects of the village’s history thus sit alongside one another: political organization, preserved buildings, and religious design.

Churches from different periods

The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Matthew the Apostle dates back to the 13th century. It was extensively remodeled in the High and Late Gothic styles in the 15th century. Its origins and remodeling mark two distinct phases of construction. The church is also known for its bronze baptismal font, which adds a specific detail about its furnishings to the architectural history.

The Evangelical church in Tvarožná was built in 1778 in the Baroque-Classicist style. In the 17th century, Evangelicals under pressure from the Counter-Reformation were allowed to build a wooden Articular church in Tvarožná; it no longer survives. Comparing the churches reveals two distinct building histories: the Roman Catholic church has its 13th-century origins and 15th-century Gothic remodeling, while the Evangelical church is defined by its construction in 1778 and its Baroque-Classicist style.

A walk and the landscape

An easy walk leads from Vrbov to Tvarožná. The path passes through a pine forest and climbs to meadows above Tvarožná. From the meadows, you can see Tvarožná, Ľubica, and Kežmarok, as well as the High Tatras; visibility depends on the weather. Both the route and the views from the higher meadows are practical points to consider when planning your trip.

As of May 31, 2024, parts of Tvarožná’s cadastral area lie within the Levočské vrchy Special Protection Area for birds. Check current official information for the protected-area boundaries before your visit.
