Pozba brings together a protected natural monument, memorial sites and religious history. This creates a varied picture when choosing your destination: Tankošký cer represents nature and cultural significance, while the monument, cemetery and church building reveal different historical connections. Studnička Pozba adds a pilgrimage site with its own religious tradition to these themes.

Landscape and natural monument

The protected Tankošký cer is a 400-year-old Turkey oak (Quercus cerris); it is protected because of its scientific and cultural significance. This brings together nature and culture in a single tree. Pozba’s relief is shaped mainly by lowland hills with moderate to pronounced undulations; their elevations range from 156 to 253 metres. These elevations provide a sense of the landscape, while the oak stands out as a specific natural monument.

Early settlement and architectural history

Archaeological finds from the Pozba area attest to a Neolithic settlement of the Lengyel culture and an Eneolithic settlement with fluted, or grooved, pottery. The two findings point to different prehistoric settlement contexts. The Reformed church is the oldest monument in the municipality and was built in 1785 in the Toleration Classicist style. Pozba’s single-storey, rectangular railway station building has also been preserved almost in its original condition. The finds offer a glimpse into prehistory, while the church and railway station building illustrate different aspects of architectural history.

Memorial sites in Pozba

A monument erected in 1994 to the victims of the First and Second World Wars stands in the square in Pozba. Its inscriptions record the two conflicts separately: engraved on it are the names of nine First World War victims and 22 people killed in the Second World War. Another memorial site is the Jewish cemetery in Pozba, where marble gravestones have been preserved. Alongside the war memorial, it offers a different historical and religious perspective.

Studnička Pozba: Chapels and Stations of the Cross

Studnička Pozba is dedicated to the Seven Sorrows of Mary and lies in the triangle between the municipalities of Pozba, Bardoňovo and Dedinka. The complex includes the chapel above the spring, built in 1926 with donations from pilgrims. A second chapel, dating from 1914, stands opposite it. Above the spring, the Calvary features 15 images of the Stations of the Cross attached to trees; the complex also includes a Lourdes grotto with a statue of Our Lady of Lourdes. The combination of chapels, Stations of the Cross and Lourdes grotto gives concrete form to the religious associations of the complex. From May to the end of October, Holy Mass is regularly celebrated there every Sunday at 11:00 a.m. If attending the service is important to your trip, check the schedule in advance so you can plan around the stated time.
