Malý Cetín: Local History, Cycling Route and Seasonal Leisure
Accommodation in Malý Cetín
When planning a trip to Malý Cetín, you can choose from several themes: local history, cycling and leisure activities with clearly defined seasons. You can decide what to focus on based on whether you are interested in historic buildings, want to plan a bike ride, or would like to take into account the seasonal opportunities at the oxbow lake of the Nitra. A multi-purpose sports court and community events add to the options.
Local history in buildings and the landscape
The former one-room elementary school building was built at the beginning of the 20th century and is now home to the Malý Cetín municipal office. Its former use as a school and its current municipal function belong to different chapters of its history.
The religious buildings continue this chronology: the chapel in Malý Cetín was built in 1965, and the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows was consecrated in 2008. Construction and consecration refer to different events and place the two buildings within the more recent history of the village.
A statue of Saint Urban stands in the vineyards of Malý Cetín. It adds a cultural landmark in the wine-growing landscape, rather than being associated with another building.
The history of the Cetínka also goes back a long way. The river is documented from 1240 under the historical name “Cherhen.” In 1272, the area formed by the Cetínka was referred to as “terra Ceten,” meaning the land of Cetín. The two names refer to different things: the river and the area it formed.
The archaeological perspective also extends beyond the village itself: the area between Čechynce, Malý Cetín and Veľký Cetín has been inhabited for at least 3,500 years. This regional context complements the history of the buildings and the Cetínka with a long history of settlement.
Cycling route and observation tower
The cycling route from Nitra to Golianovo branches off in the direction of Malý Cetín. Another cycling reference is the Golianovo observation tower: it stands on the Nitra–Vráble cycle route, on the border between Malý Cetín and Golianovo. If you are planning a ride, pay attention to the route names: the branch in the direction of Malý Cetín is part of the route from Nitra to Golianovo, while the tower stands on the Nitra–Vráble route.
The observation tower is 22 metres tall, open year-round and free to enter. Check the latest visitor information before your visit, as opening details may change.
Leisure by season
Leisure opportunities at the oxbow lake of the Nitra near Malý Cetín vary by season: fishing is possible there in summer, while in winter the oxbow lake can be used for ice skating. This distinction can help you plan your trip around the activity you want, rather than assuming both options are available year-round.
Malý Cetín also has a multi-purpose sports court with evening lighting. This adds another sporting option to the seasonal activities by the water.
The municipality organizes an Easter table tennis tournament. The event “obecná fašiangová zabíjačka” is also very popular in Malý Cetín. If you would like to plan your stay around either event, check the specific event date in advance.
