If you’re looking for a hotel in Marianka, the focus of your stay can help you choose your destination: the town combines a long pilgrimage tradition with churches and chapels, an exhibition on slate mining, and trails in a woodland setting. Consider whether religious history, architecture or a hike is most important for your trip. These themes provide a practical framework for exploring Marianka as a destination.

Pilgrimage History and Architecture

Marianka is Slovakia’s oldest pilgrimage site. In the historical context of the former Kingdom of Hungary, it was also the first Marian pilgrimage site. These two descriptions refer to different territories: one to Slovakia, the other to the former kingdom. The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is originally Gothic and retains its Gothic structure. At the same time, most of the architectural monuments in the Marian Valley date from the Baroque period. Marianka thus brings together several periods of architectural history.

The Marian Way was created in the early 18th century between the church and the Chapel of the Miraculous Spring. Six more chapels were built along the way. They are dedicated to events in the life of the Virgin Mary and her feast days. The Rotunda Chapel of the Holy Spring was built in 1696 over a miraculous spring. Those interested in how the pilgrimage site developed will find several buildings and stops here, each with its own religious significance.

The Stations of the Cross comprise 14 stations, including 13 chapels, as well as fifty life-size statues. They are set in a wooded landscape on the slope above the Lourdes Grotto, on the left bank of the Mariánsky potok, formerly known as Kláštorný potok. The Lourdes Grotto was built in the first half of the 20th century. The Marian pilgrimage takes place on 8 September, the Feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary; it is Marianka’s most important annual event. Check the current programme before your trip.

An Insight into Slate Mining

A mini-exhibition on slate mining is located beside the third Marian chapel in the Marian Valley. It is considered Slovakia’s smallest mining exhibition. Photographic and documentary materials, together with expert commentary, provide an overview of the history of slate mining and processing. As visiting arrangements may change, it is advisable to check the current visitor information in advance.

The preserved slate mine, with its three extraction chambers, is not open to the public. The exhibition and the mine therefore represent two distinct aspects of local mining history: the exhibition provides information about mining and processing, while the mine, as a preserved structure, is not accessible to the public.

Landscape and Trails

The pilgrimage site is set amid forests in the Little Carpathians. The eastern part of Marianka’s conservation area belongs to the Malé Karpaty Protected Landscape Area. The European Cultural Route of Saints Cyril and Methodius also passes through Marianka: its Bratislava–Hodonín section runs through the town.

For a hike, the signposted “Na Pajštún” circular route runs from Marianka via Borinka, Pajštún, Pod Kozliskom, Dračí hrádok, Svätý vrch and Klčovanice, before returning to Marianka. The trail starts at the SAD bus stop above the monastery grounds. Another option is the walking route from Marianka to Rača via Malý Slavín, Pánova lúka and Malá Baňa. It is about 10 kilometres long; trail conditions and markings may change. The two routes differ in their destinations: the circular route returns to Marianka, while the longer walking route ends in Rača.

A cycling route also leads to Marianka’s main square: it follows the yellow “C” cycling tourism sign or cycle route 8008, and part of it runs along a dirt road. Route numbers and alignments may change, so it is a good idea to check the current route information in advance.
