Kesovce lies on the eastern edge of the Rimavská kotlina basin, at the foot of the eastern part of the Cerová vrchovina hills and in the valley of a tributary of the Slaná River. This location between the edge of the basin, the foot of the hills and the river valley provides the setting for the landscape features within the municipality.

Landscape and Elevation

The cadastral area consists predominantly of open rolling hills. There are pronounced terraces in the west; in the east, remnants of thermophilic Turkey oak forests and oak-hornbeam forests remain. The contrast between the predominantly open rolling hills and the remnants of woodland in the east describes the character of the area more accurately than a single, uniform landscape form.

Kesovce lies at elevations between 183 and 388 metres; the village centre is at 197 metres. The range describes the elevation span of Kesovce, while the second figure specifically refers to the village centre. These are different reference points for understanding the area and are not interchangeable figures. 197 metres is within the elevation range.

Local History and Church Ruins

Kesovce has been mentioned in written sources since 1232. A distinctive historic structure in the village is the ruin of a Reformed church, a single-nave Neoclassical building. The presbytery has a segmental end; the tower in front dates from 1859.

Two terms help explain the building’s design: single-nave describes a building with one nave, while the presbytery is the chancel area. The segmental end refers to this chancel area, while the tower stands in front. This makes it possible to distinguish the nave, presbytery and tower as separate parts of the church building.

The ruins are currently abandoned; the nave has no roof. If you plan to include the church in your visit, check its condition and access arrangements beforehand.

Events and Nature

In 2024, Kesovce held a celebration to mark the opening of its bell tower. Detský deň is a traditional event in Kesovce and took place on 3 June 2026. If you would like to plan your stay around an event, check the latest event dates before making plans.

An unusual Adriatic oak (Quercus virgiliana) grows near Kesovce. A rare sword-leaved helleborine (Cephalanthera longifolia) grows beneath the oak’s spreading crown. For nature enthusiasts, this pairing is a specific highlight alongside the landscape and the historic building.

Kesovce for Your Travel Decision

These features also differ in scale: elevations and landforms describe the municipal area, the Reformed church is a single building, and the oak with the helleborine belongs to the surrounding area. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Kesovce, these highlights can help you decide whether the landscape, architectural history or nature best matches your interests.
