Hnúšťa offers cultural and historical insights, from mining to sacred and civic architecture. The city’s highlights also include a large sgraffito, a historic stone bridge, and the river landscape within the city limits. This gives you several ways to get to know Hnúšťa, with its sights extending beyond a single chapter of the city’s history.

Basin Landscape and Rivers

The city lies in a basin at the foot of the Stolické vrchy mountains. The surrounding area is lined by the elevations of Sinec, Ostrá, Štepov vrch, Brandzová, and Brezina. In the city center, the Klenovská Rimava and Tisovská Rimava meet to form the Rimava. Both the basin setting and the confluence of the rivers shape Hnúšťa’s geographical layout.

Mining History and Exhibitions

The Hnúšťa Mining Museum presents the mining history of the city and region. A visit also includes access to an unused area of a mine that is still in operation. Visitors cover 600 meters in the underground areas. Advance arrangements may be required for this visit, so take this into account when planning.

Another way to discover the city’s history is to visit the Petrivaldský Villa. This two-storey neoclassical building dates from around 1830 and has been a national cultural monument since 1998; its number is 11262. The villa features an interactive exhibition about Janko Francisci-Rimavský and Matej Hrebenda, as well as an exhibition on the development of the book. The exhibition is open on weekdays. Weekend visits are possible only by prior arrangement and depend on whether a guide is available.

Architecture and Monuments

Vojtech Stašík’s “Detvanec” sgraffito, created in 1957, is the largest in Slovakia. The churches offer two different dates to consider: the neoclassical Evangelical church dates from 1808 and stands on the site of an older church with a cemetery dating to the early 14th century. The neoclassical Roman Catholic church dates from 1802; the first chapel was built in 1788. These dates place the buildings in different periods of local history.

The Maša district is also home to a monument with a distinctive building history: the Mašiansky Bridge is one of two surviving single-arch stone bridges dating from around 1765. It is covered by a newer structure. Within the cadastral area of Hnúšťa, a section of the Márie Széchy educational trail follows the historic road between Fiľakovo and Muráň castles, dating from 1644. The city established this section of the educational trail in 2021.
