Utekáč combines a long history of glassmaking with historic buildings and outdoor activities. When planning your stay, you can organize the themes according to your interests and the season: the industrial past sits alongside the history of the chapels and manor houses, while hiking, the seasonal climbing wall, and cross-country skiing offer different ways to spend your time.

Glassmaking History and Products

The glassmaking tradition in Utekáč lasted for more than 215 years. Historically, the Utekáč glassworks had the largest melting furnace in the Kingdom of Hungary. Its roof structure was also recognized as a monument of cultural and technical heritage. Together, the tradition, industrial scale, and architectural heritage make the glassworks an important subject for travelers interested in the town’s history.

The Clara glassworks produced household glassware and lighting glass, kerosene lamp chimneys, and, from 1917 onward, glass bulbs for electric light bulbs. The product range thus combined glass for everyday use with products for different types of lighting. Kerosene lamp chimneys and glass bulbs for electric light bulbs are two specifically named products; the glass bulbs were added from 1917 onward. This makes it possible to explore the industrial history not only through its long duration, but also through the variety of glass products.

Chapel and Manor House

The architectural history can also be traced through two buildings. The Neo-Gothic Chapel of St. Anthony of Padua was built around 1824 and contains the Kuchynkov family crypt. Count Forgáč’s manor house was built around 1800. The approximate construction dates are just over two decades apart. This allows the chapel to be compared chronologically with the manor house, while its dedication and the crypt add a distinct family connection. Industrial history is not Utekáč’s only historical focus: architecture, religious dedication, and family history are also part of the town’s story.

Hiking and Seasonal Activities

The climbing wall on Utekáč’s historic chimney operates from April 1 to October 31. It can be reached by train, car, on foot, or by bicycle. When planning your trip, you can take into account both its clearly defined operating period and the various ways to get there. If the climbing wall is to be a focus of your stay, plan your trip within this period.

Hiking in the Veporské vrchy is available in Utekáč. There is also the Utekáčska horská tridsiatka, a local hiking offering. If you want to focus your stay on hiking, you can consider these two options separately: hiking in the Veporské vrchy and the named local offering. Together, they give your stay a distinct focus on activities alongside the town’s history.

In winter, Utekáč offers ideal conditions for cross-country skiing; seasonal conditions may vary. Unlike the climbing wall, which has a specified operating period from spring through autumn, cross-country skiing is part of winter planning. If you are planning a trip for cross-country skiing, check the conditions for your travel dates.

When to Visit and Finding a Hotel

Glassmaking history and historic buildings offer a different reason to travel than hiking or a seasonal activity. For the climbing wall and cross-country skiing, the relevant season is a factor; for a stay focused on local history, the historical attractions take center stage.
